Cake Servings

We are going with The Cake Guys and one of their Sweet Inspirations packages. We are inviting 110-115 people. Although I'm sure some may not be able to make it, I plan to estimate that everyone is making it so we have enough of everything. TCG offers two packages near our guest count -- one package is for 100 guests and the other package is for 125 guests. I've seen posts on other boards stating NOT to over-order on cake because then you are just stuck with it, but I wanted to get y'alls opinions. Should I order the 100 or the 125 package? It's a significant price difference for us so I'd like some other feedback.

I'm using them too! Actually they accept changes to the contract up to 2 weeks before the date so I would order the 100 guest package and change it later if you need too!

When do they need a final count by? Can you order the 100-serving-package now and bump up to 125 if you do have 100% attendance?

I was able to give my cake baker the number of people that were attending 1.5 weeks before the wedding. She calculated how much to make based on that. Thank goodness, because we invited 155 guests -- and only 70 RSVP'd yes. That would've been a ton of leftover cake, and a lot of wasted money.

(I actually got two quotes from all our vendors that charged per person -- their prices if 100% attended and their prices if only 50% attended -- to make sure they didn't just charge us the difference if we had a lower guest count.)

You should also keep in mind that even if you have all guests show up, not everyone will eat cake. (It's balsphemy imho) Stick with the 100 for now and up it later

Thank you! The girl I talked to while we were in for Sample Saturday before didn't mention this to me at all. She was like, "Yeah, once you have a more accurate picture of the guest count, just e-mail us the contract!" That's exactly what I'll do then -- order the 100 and then change it later if need be. I just don't wnat to be stuck with a ton of leftover cake. I LOVE wedding cake and we'll already have that tasty top tier hanging out in our apartment...I don't need to have a boatload of cake sitting on my counter begging me to stuff my face with it on top of that LOL. <img src="http://cdn.cl9.vanillaforums.com/downloaded/ver1.0/content/scripts/tinymce/plugins/emotions/images/smiley-tongue-out.gif" border="0" alt="Tongue out" title="Tongue out" />

This made me LOL. :) TCG's facts say that if you serve beer, wine, or signature drinks that cake consumption automatically goes down. Really? I know I can always make room for both!

Actually, I frequently miss out on cake at weddings, especially if there's alcohol and a great band/DJ. At a good friend's wedding, I remember the cake being cut ... walking toward the cake to get a slice ... someone asking me to dance (this was pre-DH :))... more dancing ... and then by the time I sat down to give my feet a rest, the cake was gone. :(

I laughed at this too for the same reason!!! Oh and if you do have lots of extra cake for some reason... well I'm sure some of us can come help you eat it. Haha. :)

Well, I don't think they ran out of cake -- it's just that it was all cut up and served or otherwise put away. I should've mentioned that I danced for probably 5 or so dances in a row before I remembered the cake.

Those dedicated to getting cake will definitely get cake. At the time, I was too focused on the boys and the dancing.

Well, it wasn't entirely their fault. This was before the SI package. We ended up having far less people than planned and I could have changed the contract, but MIL paid it off early so I just left it. That was a mistake. In addition to taking home an entire tier, everyone got two pieces. It was ridiculous how much cake there was. But I do think they steered us towards more cake than we actually needed.

We ordered our cake based on the size of the cake. Originally we were going to order the cakes based on guest count. When FI saw the size of the wedding cake for 75 people he said "Oh no that is so not good enough." So we will be offering take out boxes for left over cake. And I kind of don't mind bringing cake home since we are getting our cake from our favorite bakery and they never seem to let us down in the quality department.

I guess I am in the minority here, but I ordered extra cake for the amount of people that RSVPed for a few reasons.

When a baker says a serving size, you should find out how big the size is. Most of the time it's really small. I didn't want my guests to have a sliver of a slice, I wanted them to have a real piece so I ordered extra and was able to pass out more "normal" sized pieces.

I didn't want anyone not to get cake. I would be so embarrassed if we ran out and not everyone got some. I'd rather have too much than not enough.

Also, I had little boxes that allowed guests to take home cake with them. I know for a fact several people took cake home with them which then lessened the amount we took home.

After ordering extra and having boxes for guests to take cake home we probably had enough cake left over for roughly 4-6 pieces. So, not too much at all.

In the end do what you think is best, these are just my suggestions.

I ordered the 125 package for our 130 person reception and I currently have half of the grooms cake and almost an entire tier of the bridal cake sitting in my fridge and freezer. I would go with the 100 package, but definitely not more than that. I initially liked the idea of having extra cake, but right now it is a PITA.

We are doing the 125 person pacakage for 150 guest invited. We took the grooms cake servings and made it a tier on the wedding cake, since FI didn't want a cake and asked for a chocolate fountain.

I won't mind terribly if we are left with a ton of key lime.

Exactly. And I had a regular cake so I could have probably saved MIL a ton. When I saw how much extra we had, I felt terrible about it. She probably thought I had lost my mind.

See, it's so hard for me to gauge.

My family is a pretty big "sweets" family in general but at the same time, it seems like The Cake Guys are pretty generous on the serving sizes so maybe 100 would really be okay even if we end up with 115ish?

Stephie -- how big were your servings? Were they more of the sliver or what you would consider a more "normal" serving size? Just curious to see.

They were nice normal slices I thought. Not huge but certainly not slivers. Everyone got a slice of tres leches and a slice of chocolate and then we brought home our whole tier of white with raspberry untouched.

I guess it could also depend on how the venue cut it. Maybe they did that on purpose so everyone could get a slice of both. But it was too much cake, no matter how you slice it, heh. :)

I'm going to go home tonight and see what our contract said, now I'm curious.

I ordered a cake to serve 110 for 115 guests. I had the entire bottom layer left. Literally, 20 lbs of cake. I also had half of the groom's cake left. I took the cake to work, and they ate it for a week straight. Extra cake it a huge PITA!

Ladies that were at my wedding, please chime in....how big were the pieces that the AEC staff cut from my cake? I feel like they were pretty generous servings but maybe I'm just thinking of the pieces that J and I cut for eachother.

In regard to the size of the cake looking small, and in turn ordering more cake, I wanted more tiers than our would be so I added fake tiers...to make it look bigger, but it's styrofoam.

As for size from Courtski's wedding:

The slices off the bottom tier for 4in tall by about 1/2 to an inch thick. It was a lot of cake in 1 slice

Their serving sizes sound a lot more "normal" than the sliver of cake! I think we'll definitely undershoot it just a bit on a guest count if we need to as it sounds like going over can lead to LOTS of extra cake! I'm turning in the contract on Saturday and now Courtski and Kendall have convinced me to try the Key Lime even though that's not normally something I'd go for. Ohhhh darn, more cake tasting...

I just got married and we ordered more servings (with both cakes combined) than we had guests. I was freaking out about it so I got a bunch of to-go boxes with the intention of guests being able to take a slice home. Surprisingly, almost all the cake was gone except like 10 pieces and for the leftovers, the caterer ended up providing to-go boxes so we didn't use any. If you're interested, I'd be willing to just give you the to-go boxes in the name of making space in our small apartment.
