Rehearsal Dinner...On the 4th of July??

Hey Everyone!

I've been tossing around this idea to my FI and he doesn't seem sold so I thought I'd get a few other opinions.  Our wedding is going to be Friday July 6, 2012.  We won't have too many out of towners, except the majority of his family (approx. 20 people out of our 120).  In my little world, a rehearsal dinner should be a fun way to enjoy each other's company and prepare for the exciting event.  Being as most of our wedding party will be off for the 4th, which is a Wednesday, and will have to take Thursday off (for travel/rehearsal) anyway, would it make sense to have everyone come in on Wednesday and have the rehearsal on Wednesday instead?  This way we could have a BBQ style rehearsal dinner (easy and cheaper) and even catch the fireworks together.  This would also leave Thursday for a possible shower or just to finish up the odds and ends.

Any opinions would be greatly appreciated!  Thanks!!

This is a toughy.  I'm a big believer in not deciding what people should do for holidays... but if you know they will not have any other big plans that you are taking them away from, it could work.

What if you still do a picnic-style rehearsal on the 5th?  I'm not too sure how it would work out for your guests, but I wouldn't say "no" to BBQ two days in a row, that's for sure!!!

If your rehearsal is going to be on Thursday the 5th, why are you going to have the rehearsal dinner the night before on the 4th????  I think it would be rude to ask the people at your ceremony venue to forgoe their holiday plans to give you a wedding rehearsal because it would be good for you.

Keep with tradition.  Wait until Thursday.  Find someplace to eat that is still within your budget.  I personally would be upset if you served me potato salad and hot dogs at a rehearsal dinner - bad charma for all my efforts to support you on your wedding ventures.

I agree with LilyWater on this one. Let people enjoy plans with their own famiilies on the 4th, then do a bbq theme on the 5th for your rehearsal. Quite frankly, most people enjoy having a BBQ on the 4th, but who wants to sit through an hour to hour and a half rehearsal on the holiday? I sure wouldn't. Most people would rather be with their families in their backyards drinking beer and grilling. And I doubt your officiant would be thrilled with the idea of being away from his/her family to essentially work on the holiday.

As for the food, I love the idea of a low key BBQ, but serve a nice BBQ (which can still easily fit in a budget). Think outside of the traditional hot dog and hamburger. Especially if you have some vegans or vegetarians friends/family.

Thanks for the input! I now see a few other reasons on why it's not such a good idea and agree! We will stick to tradition and go for the 5th.  Thank you for opening my eyes to this! :)
