Resume People

So, I've revamped my resume and I really need some eyes on it. Help me word things better...help me not suck.

Basically, I got a degree in Mass Comm, but have since moved more towards a marketing/PR role and that's what I want to do. I'm moving and will be needing a job in like a month.

This is my first non-mass com job and it's not what I want to do with my life - I don't like sales/leasing and I don't want people to think that's all I can do. Can I e-mail my resume to some of you? I'll love you forever...

Anyone know anyone in Greensboro, NC who wants to give me a job?? ;-)

LDY, I'll look at it if you want. But being an engineer, I might not be looking at it correctly. Do you say explicitly in your objective statement the type of work that you'd like to do and where you'd like to be?

Everyone is telling me NOT to do an objective statement!!!

MP engineers still do objective statements, but I think everyone else is going away from them? It seems to be the trend in business at least.

I'll look at it. I'm in marketing, so it should help. But, be warned, I haven't done a US resume in about 6 or 7 years. Only a Swedish one. I'm sure I can assist though.

I'll look at it too.I've ha to change careers 3 times since getting my master's degree and relocating so I've gotten pretty good at telling prospective employers what they want to hear!

Really? That sounds strange to me. Is that because it's a little bit more "free form" in the marketing sector? I feel like if you want something, then tell them and go after it. Obviously you can change your resume and objective statement depending on the job that you're applying for, similarly you can change your cover letter.

Who are the marketing and HR people on here? Snippy?

I sent you a PM with my email, but again, I might not be able to look at it very well, since I'm in a totally different industry.

Huh! I wonder why? Like I said, it just makes sense to say "This is what I want to do!" Puts off a motivational vibe to me.

ETA: Do people still do cover letters? That'd be another place to discuss what you want to do and why you'd be a good fit for the open position.

Yes and no. Lots of times, from what I'm told, cover letters are kind of gleaned over. I plan to do one though. I think many times it's more like an e-mail with a resume attached, so not a legit cover letter?<div>

I never do an objective statement. I think they are dumb. My objective is obvious: I want the job.

I do cover letters when they are requested, but I don't write them for shiiits and giggles if they ad doesn't ask for one.

Yes - a cover letter is a great place to talk about what you want to do, and why.

My uncle (a VP at a fortune 500 company) helped me with my resume when we were moving (for a purchasing/operations job search - so business oriented) and he had me leave my objective statement in.

I think some things are industry and region related. I do a lot of litigation hires and the CVs with objective statements tend to be on ones that looked dated. Totally unnecessary for my pool of jobs, and sometimes even hurt a candidate's prospects by making their expertise seem too narrow for my needs.

At my law firm, cover letters do matter, and across departments. The good ones tend to be 3 short paragraphs where you focus the reader in on the high points of your experience and skills not easily listed on the CV itself (unpaid involvement in worthwhile job-related projects, personal experience with job-related applications/tools).

I made sure to have my objective statement say that I wanted to strucutral analysis specializing in finite element analysis. It's what I want to do. I do NOT want to do structural design and wouldn't be happy doing it. So I made myself clear.

Also our cover letters are used as the body to the email. And they're most definitely not 4 pages long. That is ridiculous, Erin!

Have you looked on ncesc (North Carolina employment security commission)? They list job listings by the region, county, etc. That would be a good place to start. I think Greensboro is in Region 2.
