October 2013 Weddings

Honeymoon Options

Hi,

My Fiance and I are currently looking at some Honeymoon spots for our Oct. '13 wedding. We want somewhere warm, but won't be able to get the extra time off for Hawaii. Would love to stay away from anything that falls in the hurricane belt! We have a few places in mind, but wanted to see if we didn't think of some great locations. Thanks!

My FI and I are leaning heavily toward Maui. My dad presented us with some other options [Thailand, Bora Bora, the Maldives, and Tahiti] that I loved the idea of. Bora Bora is home to the Hilton resort that's comprised of huts that sit over a lagoon. It's gorgeous, but the travel time was mindboggling, 24 hours each way. I don't want to spend 2 days of our honeymoon in airports or a plane, so Hawaii or the Pacific side of Mexico [Puerto Vallarta area] are the best options for us. And Hawaii doesn't require a passport. Good luck choosing a honeymoon spot! ETA: where are you located? I live on the West Coast, so Hawaii is just an 8 hour flight away. Your location affects your travel options pretty drastically. Another place for good suggestions is the Honeymoons board [located to the left] if we don't have anything to offer that you hadn't thought of. :]
  • Yea we're doing a delayed honeymoon and probably going to Australia and New Zealand - 24 hour travel time as well. I will be using ALL of my vacation time on this trip though - too.

  • We're delaying our honeymoon as well so that we can take a long trip to Iceland, Denmark, Norway and Sweden.

If you're wanting to avoid anything with hurricanes and stay in the continental US, I think your only option is Southern California. Maybe you could go to San Diego and stay at the Del Coronado or something?

If you want to stick to a shorter plane ride, the Caribbean is the way to go.  FI and I are going to the Barbados and they very rarely ever get hit with a hurricane because of where they are located.  I would stay away from the Bahamas only because they always seem to get hit if there is a storm.  Aruba is out of the hurricane belt as well and it is supposed to be beautiful there.  It is one of their rainer months but I heard that there rain is like FL, it will rain for 10 minuites then be gorgeous again.

This website is great, this is how we decided on where we are going.  It gives you the best time to travel to all the islands and what the weather is like for that time of year.  It gives you all the information you could possibly need!!

  • I am also located in NJ and we are doing a small honeymoon trip to Newport, RI in October after the wedding and then planning a bigger trip either over winter break, spring break or summer of 2014.

We're doing this for a variety of reasons - our work schedules, budget, available vacation days, graduate school schedules, hurricane season, etc.

So, this doensn't really answer your original question of  warm location in October that is not in the hurricane belt, but it is another type of idea to consider.

  • Nicole, I worried about the hurricane issue too, but the person we are booking the honeymoon through reminded us that in 2012 the worst hurricanes hit the East Coast of the US, sadly NY and NJ.  He simply said for us to just get travel insurance, cause you can plan your entire trip on the what ifs.  We are going to St. Martin, since it's a bit further south, so might be slightly less of an issue.
  • We really don't have anything planned. We both took off the week after the wedding and we know we will be going up to my grandparent's cottage for a few days. I am trying to convince FI to go to MO and possibly crash another knottie's wedding and go to Branson for a few days. So we'll see!

  • Thanks so much! I live in NJ. Aruba is on our list and so is Belize, amongst a few others.

Im trying real hard! We have decided that we will not be staying at my grandparent's cottage the whole week since there will not be a whole lot going on that time of year. We have talked the last few years of going to Branson, so why not then?!

HA that'd be awesome, but that would mean I wasn't crashing and well I kind of want to crash at least one wedding in my life time.

Southern California is really nice in October especially if you go to San Diego (I grew up there). Los Angeles isn't too interesting unless you are really into Hollywood Stars and tourist shops. But San Diego is awesome. There are lovely historical places to visit for relatively little money and it has a great night life if you are into that.

I loved San Diego and cannot wait to go back!

  • We are going to a wedding in Cali in July. The only place we'd consider staying in the USA for is Hawaii and don't think that is going to happen :( Thanks for all your suggestions.

[QUOTE]We are going to more likely get a cruise and go to the Caribbean.  We talked to cruiselines and if there is a hurricane in the areas that the cruise is planned to go they will take you to different islands. There is some really good rates for the fall since it is not their busy season.  We are using our points from the credit card and venue to book most of the cruise.  We have another payment at the end of this month, which will give us 25,000 more points and should help pay for all of the cruise.  I wanted to to go to punta cana, which is the gulf part of Mexico.  Between my FI not wanting to go to Mexico right now and if there is a storm there is no back up plan.

Punta Cana is in the Dominican Republic, not Mexico. It's between Haiti and Puerto Rico. I was supposed to go there earlier this month but had to cancel when my FI ruptured his Achilles tendon :(

Aruba is out of the hurricane belt and I've always heard great things about it. Our plan is Hawaii.

We are renting a house for a week on folly beach in South Carolina. We bought travel insurance just in case, $120 to cover both of us and to be able to cancel for any reason is well worth it to me!

Woops- accidentally posted before I was done writing. I went to Aruba when I was in high school and it was awesome.

  • We are going to St. Lucia.  We have our HM booked for Feb for right now, but the school district I teach in just eliminated February vacation (literally 2 days ago) for next year! So now we are trying to possibly switch our HM to right after the wedding.  St. Lucia is not a high risk during the hurricane season and our TA has traveled there many times during that month, so we might just go then.
