Nicknames

Is anyone else funny about this? My whole life I've been Jaclyn. Maybe because there was a little boy down the street who was called Jackie, or because my oldest brother was a HUGE Jackie R. fan... IDK.. But for whatever the case, I introduce myself as Jaclyn. Close family and friends all call me it, so when someone I feel should know me well enough calls me Jackie, it's like nails on a chalk board.

Someone just posted on facebook using my full name, and I haven't seen her for YEARS. And I was like ahhh, my full name (as in ahhh relief sound).

So my question is, does it bother you when certain people call you a nick name? If so, what is said nick name? Obviously, mine's Jackie.

I hope it doesn't bother you that I call you Jac. Because I sometimes do but I will stop if you wish! ;)

None of the nicknames really "bother" me but sometimes people call me Angie and it catches me off-guard. Because no one that really knows me calls me that. I don't really mind it one way or another, but it strikes me as odd I guess. Just about everyone calls me Ang(e). It's rare for people to use my full name.

I more hate when people mess up my name. Being Cassie means only nickname from that is Cas, which doesn't bother me. Casey or Cathy irks me. I was called Casey at my HS graduation and wanted to punch the girl. Usually when I have to leave a name for a table or something I say Jackie because peopke don't mess that up.

I'm totally guilty of this. But everyone does it out in MN, so at least for me it's a regional thing. I always realize right after I've said it that someone might take offense and I apologize right away. I've tried so hard to break the habit, but it's so difficult! It's like trying to say boat instead of boooaaat.

    Yes!

Some family members call me Nikki. Which don't bother me. My aunts brother was a partner with my boss before he became judge (that is how I wound up here in the first place) anyway, my boss calls me Nikki because my aunt does, now there is a new attorney who calls me Nikki and it drives me nuts. I am at work please use my full name!

Mandy. I HATE, no LOATH the nickname Mandy. My mom hated it too, might be why I do. A close family friend still calls me Mandy and like you said, nails to the chalk board. But she's been doing it for 26 years now... it's not going to change.

I've been Jennifer my whole life. I introduce myself that way, I write it out that way, and my parents & family have called me Jennifer for the past 25 years. I'm not sure why people think it's okay to shorten it to Jenn, but a lot of people just assume it's okay. After about 4 years of correcting people, pretending not to answer until they say the right name, and just flat out ignoring, I've just come to terms that it's a common nickname and I might as well suck it up. I still hate it though.

Jenny, I don't mind so much, but I'm clearly not a Jenny, as those who have met me will tell you.

Same with DD. Her name is Annabelle. I don't want her to be called Anna, Annie, belle, bella, or any of the other shortened versions. If anything, Ellie will be acceptable. We're actually contemplating just calling her by her middle name, Grace. We'll see though.

    @madam - Jac I don't mind. Something about Jackie....

I started a new school in 4th grade and we went around saying what we liked to be called. I remember saying "jaclyn, because jackie's a boys name" and three girls down, the girl goes "I like to be called Jackie". I didn't make many friends that year....

I used to get really annoyed when people called me Mary Rose, because I was only ever called that at home when I was in trouble. But when I was younger and at my dad's side of the family's functions, they all called me Mary Rose because I have an aunt Mary, so they were trying to differentiate, but I didn't understand that at the time so I would always snap back and say "WHAT!?" Heh. I don't mind it anymore, but it took a long time to get used to it.

It's not really possible to shorten my name to a nickname. Erin is about the only way you can do it. Although, my mom and siblings have always shortened it to Er (pronounced like "air"). They're the only ones that do it and I'd be shocked if anyone else ever said it.

However, it drives me nuts when people say it wrong. I go by Air-in. But people always pronoucne it Err-in. I've tried explaining it to people, but they never hear the difference.

Paprika - My sister's name is Jennifer, but she's ALWAYS been Jenny. She absolutely hates it when people call her Jenn or really Jennifer too, haha.

I go by Gina. I have my whole life. My full name is Regina. It's not that I don't like it... it's my name. And professionally, I introduce myself as "Regina" because that's what I write on paperwork. I use Gina on the air. My friends and family all call me Gina. Everyone at Ulta? Calls me Regina. Friends of mine will go in and ask if Gina is working, and they say that no one by that name works there.

G I don't mind as a nickname. I was G or GB (short for Gina Bean--some of my college professors even picked up on that one) all through high school & college. Reg is not okay. Reggie is definitely not okay. And Gigi or Geeg is also not okay... because that was my grandmother.

I hate when people call me Chris or Chrissy. I have always been Christina. I don't ever indicate that I want to be called anything else. My Economic teacher in high school used to call me Chrissy. It was like 1,000 nails on a chalkboard. He hated me for some reason and I think he did it on purpose.

I HATE with a passion to be called Jessi. I cringe when people call me that (ie: my nosey neighbor, DH's Grandmom)
I'm not a fan of Jessica either-- it sounds too formal. Mostly everyone calls me Jess except my mom who says "I named you jessica, I'm calling you jessica"

I have a lot of nicknames so even Jess doesnt get used a lot with my friends

There is someone at work who calls me (and others my age) "young lady" and I want to tell him off. The CEO at my last company used to refer to any employees under the age of 30 as "kids" and I certainly let HR know how I felt about that.

I've been a Jen for so long, I even have Jen on my namebadge at work! I do respond to Jennifer, but usually I'm afraid I'm in trouble! But there have only been two people to get away with calling me Jenny in the history of time, one was the boy I grew up across the street from, the other was my h.s. spanish teacher. If people try to call me Jenny now, I usually ignore them b/c I don't realize they're talking to me.

In high school and grad school, my last name was my nickname. I saw an old grad school friend a few weeks ago and he called me that and I missed my old last name. Again.

My poor little brother was "Little Fitz" in high school b/c everyone knew me by our last name. He didn't appreciate that.

Nicknames are not too big a deal for me - most close family and friends will generally address me as Heather or go with "Heath" (the first syllable of my name, pronounced as such). That's not anything I generally go by, though.

The only annoyance I sometimes have is that my name rhymes with an awful lot of stuff, so I have been long perturbed by people who seem to think that it's fun to call me things like "Heather Feather, How's the Weather"? I remember particularly in middle school this bothering me to no end, especially when my own friends did it because they thought it was amsuing.

My entire life no one has ever called me Kimberly except my parents. So much so that I even use Kim legally on my real estate license, credit cards, etc.

Lately though I am starting to not mind Kimberly so much- and the only reason people are calling me that on occasion is because when I changed my last name, my first.lastname as an email address werent available, so I went with kimberly.lastname instead. Because of this, some people have been calling me that, and I'm actually finding I don't mind it as much as I used to. It just sounds way more formal to me, so it catches me off guard - and I definitely wouldn't feel right with friends calling me Kimberly.

I have so many nicknames-- Lizzie, Amers, Amerbutt-- no one actually calls my by my first name. Someone once tried to do "Betsy" and I shut that down pretty quickly.

Something that does bug me... my SIL spells it Lizzy. She reads my blog so she CLEARLY can see it is LizzIE. It's not like you would spell my first name Amie.
