Rent vs. buy dishes, etc. for reception

We are using an outdoor DIY venue and arranging everything for the reception--linens, food, etc. We are pricing caterers--everything from places like Panera to full service caterers.  For those of you who have been in a similar setting and on a pretty tight budget, have you discovered whether it is cheaper to buy plates (either glass or white) or rent?  Thanks so much for any help!

Re: Rent vs. buy dishes, etc. for reception

  • Our caterer (Sonny Bryans) is supplying some disposable things, and everything else we are doing is disposable (drink cups, cake plates, forks for cakes). I wouldn't buy anything that's not disposable, because whoever is cleaning up afterwards will have to rinse them off and take them back. You want something that either goes back with the caterers, or something that goes in the trash.
  • Our venue supplied the plates, but if we'd gone with a more informal reception, we probably would have just used disposable -- the fancy Chinet plates and cups or something.

I would certainly not want to buy settings for 100+ people (or even 50+) and then have a bazillion plates on hand afterward.

  • I agree we are doing "fancy" disposible. There are some really cute ways to present disposable cutlery if you look on pinterest. I've attached the link below. I'm doing this exact one and I found the cutlery stamp at Michaels.

here's another link for stamping plain white paper cups:

  • Our caterer included them in his $15/pp price and that was the most cost-efficient option for us.
