Re: QOTD 9/11

  • I was a sophomore in highschool, taking a biology test.  Someone came in our classroom to tell us what was going on, and our teacher let us skip the test to watch the news coverage.

I heard some stories about this day on the radio as I drove to work this morning, and it still gives me goosebumps.

  • I was a freshman in high school... i was in American history class. People had been talking about something happen on the way to class but I didn't know until we got into class and our teacher told us and turned on the T.V.

  • I too was a sophomore in high school in a small town is Wisconsin. I came out of second period and a few of the typical drama girls were crying and we all figured they broke a nail or something. Then our AP English teacher came into the hallway and told us all what happened. We were in shock and so young that few of us understood the gravity of it. We watched the coverage all day. I wasn't able to wrap my brain around what was happening and as I get older, I'm still in shock.

    God rest their souls.
  • I was a senior in high school. We were having advisory (a lot like homeroom) and I was eating a blueberry bagel.  One of my classmates came into the room and said a plane had hit the twin towers.  Everyone thought either a) he was joking or b) it was a stunt gone wrong. No one imagined that it was a passenger plane.  After that, I went to Botany class and we watched the live coverage. Once it got to be too much, we went on a nature walk on campus. They dismissed school an hour later, since so many students had family who worked in NY and DC.

  • I was a freshmen in high school. We were getting ready to watch a movie about Pennsylvania history, because the teacher was a shady drunk he would always turn on the tv with the back of it facing the class just in case he was watching something bad when the students weren't in his room. He turned on the TV screamed "OH Shittt" and ran out of the room. We all thought that he hit the bottle before class so we all laughed at him. About a minute or two later, he brings in another teacher and they start watching it. They turn around the tv and show us what is going on. By this time both of the towers were hit, so we all knew it wasn't an accident.
The rest of the day the school was very hush hush about it, none of the teachers would let us watch what was going on, there were rumors going around everywhere. "The Mellon building in Pittsburgh was hit" or "The US Steel plant was hit" (which made me freak out because my Dad works at US Steel.) I look back at it and it really upsets me because the school/teachers denied us watching history, my one math teacher made me furious, she said that "Math is more important that what is happening."

  • I was a senior in college, getting ready for class.  I heard it over the radio that a plane had crashed into a building.  Not sure if it was a joke or not I asked my room mate to turn on her tv and sure enough it was everywhere.  Classes were cancelled for the day and we watched coverage all day.  Being from Long Island but living 2 hours away upstate I spent the morning trying to get in touch with family down in the city.  In the evening I went to an interfaith gathering and sat with other students just reflecting on the days events, being so far from family it felt comforting to being surrounded by others.

  • I was in my third period music class (7th grade - apparently the baby of the group)

We were taking a quiz when an announcement came over the loudspeaker and told us what had happened.  I literally had NO idea what was going on but my teacher was white as a sheet.  Within a few minutes we had the TVs on and watched the coverage for the rest of the day.

People talk about 'coming of age moments'.  9/11 was mine.  I grew up so much in those moments.

In my apartment. I had just gotten up to let in the maintenance guy that had arrived to switch out the screen door to my balcony. I flipped on the tv. I didn't have cable installed yet, so I only got basic. It was early enough that the news would have been on anyway, but I wasn't thinking clearly yet. They were showing footage of the smoke from the first plane. I sat there watching, trying to figure out what movie it was. And then the second plane hit, and I knew this wasn't a movie. It was real. I remember just sinking to the floor in mute horror and so many questions in my head. Within hours of that moment, every apartment building balcony was displaying the American flag or had candles burning. I was 21. It seemed such an impossible thing to take in, even from my relatively far removed corner. I couldn't imagine the turmoil on the ground in those cities, and my heart ached for them. I took that day to call my family, from whom I'd been very distant and nearly estranged. I went to church and prayed. The next day, I donated blood and funds to the Red Cross in support. Every year since, today has been my donate blood day.

  • I was interning at IBM.  I worked in the same department as my dad and he got a call from a friend saying that he was watching it on TV.  We tried to go on the internet but it was completely bogged down with everyone trying to find out information.  IBM finally changed all of their closed circuit TVs over to CNN just as the second tower fell.  I went back to my dad's office and cried.  About an hour later, my evil manager called to tell me that I was late for our meeting where he basically told me that he was transfering me to another manager because he didn't like me.  The only thing I could think of was those poor people down in NYC and their families while he was basically firing me from his team.

  • Freshman year of high school, sitting in band class.  Band teacher said something about it and we ended up watching the news for the rest of the class period.  At the end of the period the principal made an announcement.  The rest of the day is a bit of a blur - some teachers just had the news on while others tried to teach their regular curriculum.  We had an impromptu all school mass (Catholic school) the next day.
  • Spanish class. Dr. Lopez wrote it on the board in Spanish for us to decipher and we thought it was a joke and he turned on the TV and we watched the coverage like all day.

  • Junior Year of HS.  I didn't hear about it until 10-11am.  My school is not technologically advanced, so  I didn't see any coverage until Chorus after lunch.  I went to field hockey practice after school and remember it being EERILY quiet.  We are in an air traffic zone and I didn't realized how much white noise I'm used ot hearing.

  • I was in my third year of college. I walked into my second class of the day, Sociology, which was held in a classroom of the university library. The Prof walked in, and I remember wondering why she looked like she had been crying. She told us that something that would forever change the sociology of the US and world had occurred and told us that a plane had hit the WTC. By this time the second one had hit but we didn't know it yet. One of my class members worked in the Campus chapel and got permission for the class to move to the chapel lounge so we could watch the coverage. I know a couple students left to frantically call home and find out about loved ones. We watched, we cried, and when the university chaplin came in we prayed.

  • I was a freshman in college.  I walked by a group of people watching the tv on my way to class after the first tower was hit and didn't wonder much about why everyone was watching the tv.  After my class I heard what happened.  My best friend's mom drove all the way down to get me and I went home to my mom's for the rest of the day.

  • Same job, a couple of rows from where my desk is now. There is only a breakroom tv, and I remember hearing the conversations and the horror and disbelief. Because we had a domestic attack in '95, many of our employees first asked if it were here again. I listened, and everything I handled all day included a conversation that began with 'Did you hear?'

  • I was a Freshman in college, I was walking from my dorm room to the bathroom when I saw another student standing in her room in front of the TV crying. I told my roomate about the girl, and she went it to see what was wrong, she came right back into our room and turned on our TV. We watched until we went to classes I guess, the rest of the day was kind of a blur.

  • I walked into my 8th grade science class and the tv was on. I remember not really knowing what was happening but that it was important. Each class that day had the tv on and we watched the coverage. Days later we wrote poems about it in English class and in art class I made a paper mache patriotic bear holding a flag. It still sits in my room at my parents house.
  • I was feeding my then 3 month old son (now 12)... and turned on the TV for "entertainment" and BOOM there it was

    I was shocked!
  • I had the day off from work and was going to go work out, but I was hungry so decided to have a snack and turned on the tv. It was right after the 1st plane hit and Katie Courick was trying to figure out if it was an accident, and then the 2nd plane hit and it was just awful. Especially when they were live with somebody on the phone and the tower started to collapse and you just heard screaming but didn't know what was going on. I remember my gym called to ask my about the Volleyball team I was on and I was thinking what are you doing, but I realized she didn't even know. Because I am in SC they started closing stores and the mall because they didn't know what the reasoning was and our state was listed as a possible target for nuclear power plants and stuff. It was really scary.
  • I was a junior at Boston University and I had gotten locked out of my apartment the night before so I was at my friend's apartment around the corner.  I didn't have class unitl 12 that day so I was woken up by my friend's roommate yelling at us to wake up that a plane had hit one of the towers.  THey only had basic cable and the picture was really fuzzy.  Once i could understand what was happening I started freaking out.  I called my father's office and his cell phone but couldn't get through.  He worked in One World Financial center which is across the street. So I called one of his coworkers who worked in the Boston office and she said as far as she knew everyone got out fine.  I went to class and right before I walked in he called and told me he was okay.  His stories of the day and what he saw and went through still bring me to tears.

  • I was a sophomore in college in New York City. My then boyfriend's father was a building engineer in Times Square and we were frozen with fear worried that his part of townwould be next. The worst part was literally not knowing what was happening... terrified that something would happen to other parts of the city. Our entire campus was put on lockdown for three days and it took me a few years to not freak out hearing the sound of planes overhead. We didn't lose any students that day, but lots of alumni and lots of close calls. Worst day of my life.

So crazy because I was a sophmore in high school and was also in biology! I ddin't live in NC though! ;) The announcements came on and gave a brief description of what was going on. Crazy! Still feels like not too long ago that it all happened!

  • I was five days away from leaving for my freshman year of college, planning to do some packing, when I got a phone call from my dad saying "Turn on the TV. The Twin Towers were hit." I was pretty confused, but since dad would never normally call me to tell me to turn on the TV, I did... just in time to see the second plan hit. That will forever be etched in my memory...

Given that many family members live/worked in downtown Chicago at the time, I was really nervous - there was a lot of concern about an attack on our city that day.
