I'm here!  Stuck at work for another hour or so, but I think my brain shut off around lunch time...

Mocha, I'm sorry about your grandpa.  :(  We just went through that a few months ago.  It was a bittersweet kind of relief for us -- so sad to lose him, but grateful he was no longer in pain -- so I kind of know what you mean.
In Response to Re: Good evening Friday-ers : That is one HELL of a big spider. If I saw a spider that big, I couldn't be in the same room with it. Which reminds me, when FI got home last night he found one of the cats sitting in the kitchen by the garbage can, staring at a caterpillar that somehow got into the house. FI: "I'm glad Sam didn't eat it. That would have been gross. I flushed it instead." Me: <strong>"Uh, you could have just put it back outside.</strong>

• Ohh!  I loved Berlin when I visited it!  It was definitely my favorite city and totally beats Brussels.
• I"m pretty sure I'd be smooshing a spider that big, not trying to grab it witha  grabber.  Yuckies.

• I see it in the face too! But yeah I think the gray is the real reason.
In Response to Re: Good evening Friday-ers : Yes, I live in Berlin. I teach at a bilingual school here. <strong>My German still isn't great but it is pretty easy to get by in Berlin as most people speak pretty good English.</strong> It is a super fun city. I just spent a weekend here while I was living in Brussels two years ago and decided before I left that my next teaching job would be in Berlin. I moved here in August of last year and am super happy I decided to do it.
Posted by gypsybride2010
I found this to be the case as well! I only picked up about 10 words of German while there, including beer, polar bear, thank you, please, yes, no, etc. I felt bad, but people were pretty nice. And I've heard the cost of living isn't bad. At least compared to other European capitals. Although I live in LA, so it's all relative. Where are you from originally?

I will say, though, I was in Berlin with my graduate school history department, and studying history in Berlin is... odd. It's a weird city in some ways. It's really great how they've rebuilt things in the past 20 years, though. I love the old architecture mixed in with the modern stuff.

True.  No one has checked me yet.

I have a ton of paperwork to go through to change over.  It wouldn't be difficult except my savings is the same one my parents opened for me when i was born, and they have to sign everything too.  I tend to forget when I see them that I need their john hancocks.

I remember when I called Canada Revenue to change my name with them - they asked a bunch of questions to verify I was who I said I Was (how I filed my taxes last year, how much I got back, etc) and then when they were satisfied it was me they ask "Ok, what do you want to change your last name to" - didnt need to see proof, didnt ask WHY I was changing it, just asked what name I wanted. I was stunned.
• Nebb, I'm usually 100% pro having FI kill all the bugs that get into the house. Because once we had a 3 inch cockroach find its way in. No joke. *shudder* And once we had a HUGE spider come in too. Somehow, the bugs really like the kitchen door. They seem to come in there. But caterpillars I don't find creepy, and I'm not afraid they'll infest the house!

• Cost of living is ridiculously cheap for a European capital city. I can get a week's worth of groceries for less than 30 euro. Rent is quite reasonable as well.

I totally agree about the architecture thing. Where as Munich rebuilt the city to look exactly as it did prior to the war, Berlin really embraced modernity in some ways. A lot has also changed in the last twenty years since the wall came down too. There are really three distinct "looks" to the city. Pre-WWII, Post-WWII, and post fall of the wall. I find it fascinating looking at all the old building that still have bullet holes in them.

Even though the wall came down over 20 years ago there is still a very different feeling from East and West Berlin as well.

It's definitely a different city and I am still getting to know it but I really like it here for the most part.
• I'm here but still at work for another couple hours. ;( I have a headache and want to go home. We are supposed to be playtesting the game in pairs but I told them I am feeling antisocial and just want to play on my own today. :P

I'm so sorry about your grandpa, Mocha. I know what you mean about him being in a better place without the pain. That is how I feel about my family members who have passed. Hugs to you.

This weekend we have to do a LOT of wedding stuff. I'm having stress dreams every night even though I don't feel like I'm THAT stressed yet. So I'm sleeping, but not well, which is making me cranky. Oh well, four more months and the day is here. Maybe after that I will be able to sleep!

I didn't really appreciate Brussels so much while I was living there but I do have fond memories of the city. I do prefer it here in Berlin though. I am actually off to Brussels in a few hours for the weekend to visit with some friends.

I can totally understand why a tourist would not have been overly impressed by Brussels though. Not the most beautiful or exciting city.

Yes! It's so weird seeing that, since the US hasn't had a war fought on home soil in... 150+ years. It's so recent in Europe.

It's also weird to walk in East Berlin and randomly come across buildings that haven't been fixed up yet because they can't figure out who owns them. I was in Prenzlauerberg one evening (we stayed in Alexanderplatz) and we were walking down a gorgeous street of 19th century townhouses and suddenly we saw one with sagging balconies and a crumbling exterior. Our tour guide said they ALL looked like that when the wall came down. Then people said, "Well, hey, my grandfather used to own that building. Can we have it back?" And started fixing them up.

I've also heard that something like 20% of East Germans wish the wall never came down. WTF? And 12% of people in the former West Germany.

That's insane! I'm so not looking forward to the whole name change thing. We get married on July 25 and have to be back in Germany for August 15 so I really don't think I will have time to do it all before we have to leave as I'm sure it takes awhile for the marriage certificate to be sent to us. I was actually thinking of keeping my maiden name while I finish up my contract in Berlin and then just going through the whole process when we are back in Canada.

I wish I could tell you how long it took but ti was so long ago now Im not sure. All I know is I could have applied for our marriage certificate WAY sooner than we did, we followed the timeline provided by the government and in reality we could have gotten it over a month earlier.

The hardest part was getting the marriage license from Vegas. We thought we got it automatically---but, we had to order it. Changing my SS card was easy, it took all of 15 minutes, changing my license was a snap, and even changing my name at my banks was a breeze.<div>
Gypsy, I would definitely live in Prenzlauerberg! It was very pretty. I saw pictures of Potsdamer Platz back in the 1920s when it was the center of Berlin. I think the world's first traffic light was installed there because it was so busy. And then they ran the wall through it and it all became no man's land. So sad. But it's definitely way better now than it was with the wall there. ;-)
Posted by msmerymac
Potsdame Platz is the epitome of modernity in Berlin right now. It is strange to get on the S-bahn in one part of the city with buildings full of bullet holes and get off at Potsdamer Platz. It's like being in an entire different city.
• I actually waited to apply for my passport til afterwards.  I heard that as long as you book your flights under the name that is on your passport, then you shouldn't have problems.  Regardless of what your legal name is.

My cousin got married and still had 2 years left on her passport, the passport office informed her of that so she wouldn't have to spend the $100 for another 2 years.

That's good to know. Mine doesn't exire until February of 2012 so it would be good to wait if I can. I have this crazy goal of trying to fill up every page and I only have about 3 or 4 more pages to go. I'd like to fill them in the next year and a half and I would be sad to have to give it up and start with a brand new one.
• That's brutal rach.  My cards were good afterwards.  I just had to activate my new visa with my new name when it came in.

• Well, it helps that I have a couple of visas in there that take a whole page. I've had a goal since high school that I want to have visited every continent and 30 countries by the time I'm 30. I've got three years to go and I just have to make it South America and I've achieved the continent part (with the exception of Antarctica) and I think I'm pretty close to 30 countries, maybe just 3 or 4 more to go. I know, it's a strange goal to have but I love it.
