Married Name Change Ladies

I received notice that my license is expiring on my birthday of this year.  Well my birthday is June 2nd and I don't want pay to renew my license and then pay to have it changed again a few weeks later when I change my name.

So I guess my question is how much does it cost to update this stuff with a name change?  What other costs are involved with changing your name?  It just sucks that the timing is so close.

I'm not sure about everything involved but I learned yesterday if you change your name you have to pay the full price for a new passport.

I'm also interested in learning all the other costs associated.

My birthday is June 2 too! : )

Are you taking a delayed honeymoon?  I'm confused as to why you wouldn't just change your name and renew your license at the same time.

When I changed my name, I don't remember it costing too much.  I took my marriage certificate to Social Security, and that was free.  I then went to Secretary of State.  There was a fee, but I don't remember how much.  It couldn't have been too much.  That's the only place I had to pay anything for. Can't remember how much it was though, and the website isn't helping.  Sorry. :-/  I think it was the same fee for a license though.

Oh, and I think the name change on my driver's license was like $9 or something.  I don't remember the exact number, but it was really inexpensive.  I don't think the SS card change had any cost at all.

The only thing that cost any real amount of money was changing the name on the passport.  If your passport is more than one year old, you have to pay the full renewal fee.  Within a year, you have one free name change.

My license expires June 2nd.  We get back from the honeymoon on the 29th.  And from what I understand, it wouldn't be enough time to get the marriage license back, change my SS card and THEN be able to update my driver's license before it expires on my birthday.

It's more that I'm cheap and I don't want to pay twice in one month to have a valid driver's license.  But if it's less than $20 I'll just do it to avoid not having a valid ID.

Thanks birthday twin :)  (And everyone else!)

Gotcha!  Neither one of the name changes takes long at all, I was pleasantly surprised.  It all just depends on when your marriage license comes back.

I don't have anything special for June 2nd but I did want to say that you should be able to get your certified marriage license, change name at social security and still be able to change your name and renew your license by your Birthday.  Once you change your name at social security you just need to wait a day to change at secretary of state.  But this also implies that you would need to take some time off of work to do all this.  If not, it only cost $8 to change my name at SOS last week.

oh WTF. I didn't realize that I have to pay for a full new passport! That really irks me because I only renewed my passport 2 years ago and it's supposed to be good for 10 years!  Do I HAVE to change my name on my passport? Part of the reason I ask is that, we are taking a delayed honeymoon (about 2-3 weeks after the wedding, when FI finishes his finals). And I would like to have changed my drivers license, etc. before we go, but that would not be enough time to change my passport, so does it matter?

If you change your name, you need to change it on your passport in order to travel.  Otherwise it's not a valid ID because you are not Susie Smith anymore, you are Susie Jones.

Don't change your name until after you get back and book all your reservations in your maiden name.  It's really not that big of a deal and you may have been cutting it close with your name change anyway depending on how long it takes to get your marriage license back.

THIS.  Don't change anything until you get back, and book everything in your maiden name.

I will agree with some of the other posters. Don't change your name until you get back because you will not have enough time to change everything in time for the honeymoon. The passport takes 5-6 weeks anyway and you need to get your updated license first which could take about 2 weeks. Just make your reservations in your maiden name and take care of everything when you get back. And the bad part is that when you return you will have to pay for a new passport.
