Not Engaged Yet

Help with rings!

Hi! Im new here, but I am getting engaged soon! At least I hope. I just need help with picking out a ring. My boyfriend wants me to choose the ring, which I dont mind doing. We  both decided to go with moissanite because of a lot of reasons, one being price. I have two choices that I have picked out and want an opinion on both please! If we get the princess cut it will be 1.7 carats and the heart is 1 carat. I've asked my family and got no helpful advice. So I would be so happy if you ladies could help me! Thank you so much in advance. Heres the rings.

I like the princess cut personally, I think it's beautiful.  But while not my favourite the heart ring is definitely different.

The heart ring is not my style so I would go with the princess cut. But they are both beautiful rings.

I think heart engagement rings look like junior high promise rings. Not gonna lie.

But I've heard that moissanite in princess cut tends to look offcolored.

I despise heart shaped diamonds, so my vote is for the princess cut.

The heart ring really does look like a junior high ring.  The hear shaped halo doesn't help either.  Also, with the heart, you'll never find a wedding band that will sit flush with the ring, you'd have to get a curved one.

I personally hate princess cuts.  I vote you keep looking.

    I loooove princess cuts.

Since I despise princess cut rings, I'm going with the heart.  I don't really like halos that much either, but to me the heart ring is the better of the two.

Well neither of them are really my style, but if I had to choose one I would pick the princess cut.  I think heart-shaped stones look more like fashion jewelry.  Something you'd wear as a right-hand or cocktail ring.  Or as PPs said, if you were in high school.

If think that if you don't love one of these rings over the other, you should just keep looking.  Find something that you have no doubts about.  Good luck!

The princess cut looks just like one that I was looking at for myself, so obviously that would be my choice.  But I'm also weird and don't think any other cut looks good on my hand...you really should try them both on.  I was surprised to find that ones I liked in the case didn't really look good on me and ones that I wasn't too crazy about in the case looked amazing.

Although, I agree that the heart shape cut looks rather juvenile.  Don't forget, this is a ring that you will be wearing for the rest of your life which is why I'd go for something more timeless and less trendy.

I'm not a fan of that heart shaped ring.  I have to say there is a poster somewhere on TK who a heart shaped solitaire (I think it's either 1/4 or 1/3 carat) and I really like it.  It looks adorable.

My personal favorite is classic round brilliant though.

Go to a jewelry store and try on rings that are similar to those. Choose the one you like best.

I'd go with the princess cut just because I think the heart looks juvenile. But it is your ring. I definitely recommend going to try rings on though. I've hated all but two rings that I liked the look of in pictures.

I'm not a fan of heart shaped cuts; someone said it earlier exactly, that it reminds them of a junior high promise ring. Exactly. So I'd vote the princess cut. However, keep in mind, that the princess cut tends to bring out the slight discolorations that come with moissanite. Have you looked at round cuts? I've been to that exact site before; consider checking out a round halo ring. You might fall in love with one of those.  Good luck!!

Just to be clear, since people are mentioning that the princess cut brings out the yellow in moissanite...  the square cuts sold on moissaniteco.com are not actual princess cuts -- they're square brilliants.  So they have the shape of a princess but the faceting of a round...  Yellowing shouldn't be much of an issue, though all moissanites have some yellow hue.  Just think of it as a warm diamond.  I love mine.

Also, have you looked on some other websites as well?  Moissaniteco is the largest online moissanite retailer, but they are definitely not the only one, so make sure you've looked fully before you commit.  Go to the Charles and Colvard website to find a list of retailers.

I shopped extensively for my moissanite, so if you have any questions feel free to PM me.

Thanks ladies...thats exactly what I was thinking about the heart one, I think it looks young...and like a promise ring...but I thought if it was 1 carat, it would look less like a promise ring since promise rings are usually smaller. But I do love it, I guess not for a engagement ring.  And the band was another issue with it too. I think im going to go with the princess cut.

I wouldn't settle on anything until you have actually tried that style of ring on.  You shouldn't need to ask people on the internet what ring to pick.  (Then again, I think that if you were a secure 20-year-old, you wouldn't be looking for validation of your ring choice.)  Look for one that is undeniably yours.  You can really only do this by going to jewelry stores and trying lots of different styles on.  Then, go ahead and order online.  (Or at least make sure that there is a great return policy if you don't like it in person.)

Thanks but I did try on both. I tried on a princess cut at a store, and I own a heart ring, and I love them both.

Love the setting of the first one because of the intricate weaving design under the center stone, but I would go with a round halo center...  I think the princess setting with square diamond is classic and lots of people have it.  I'd rather have something different that not many people have nowadays... just my opinion.

Everyone has a round halo center these days.  It's pretty much the most popular choice.

Just get what you like regardless of what other people like or what everyone else has.

OP, do you mean a 1.7 carat equivalent, which would be a 6.5mm square brilliant Moissanite? I know 1.7 carats sounds like a lot, but once I saw it's 6.5mm, that sounds like a much more manageable size.

Just for reference (for the others here) a 6.5mm round brilliant is considered to be about the same size as a 1 carat diamond.

I've tried on 1 carat princess cut rings and i love the style, the 1 c looks lost on my finger tho because I have longer, kinda wide fingers, so I wanted bigger. But as for my wedding, I just made up that date when I signed up, we're just talking about rings now, when we have the engagement down, thats when we will talk wedding.

  • edited December 2011

Also I definetly don't want a heart ring anymore. Well at least not that one, ive done a lot of thinking and I think it looks too much like a promise ring. I just like it because its differnt and no one else would have it. The other ring I love, even thought its more popular, thats what I know I want, and will love it forever.
