Re: New York

  • Thanks sucrets, i really appreciate it!
  • Re: getting SNL tickets, you have to line up eaaaarrrrllly in the morning to get them

We did a trip down to NYC after I graduated Uni and thought it would be a great idea to see SNL.  So the Saturday morning we got up super early (like 6) and went up to the studio.  When we got to the appointed door, I think there was one other couple waiting there.  Incidentally, they were from Kitchener.

We must have been waiting there for almost an hour and only one other couple had showed up. Finally the security guard (who had walked by a few times before) asked what we were waiting for.  "SNL tickets" we said.

He laughed at us.  The show wasn't even on that week.

He said that on weeks that the show is on, there are people lined up for hours.  Like Boxing Day style camp outs.

I would definitely recommend that book New York City for Dummies, it was fantastic.  And if you plan on seeing the major sites, get the package.  The name of it escapes me right now, but it gets you access to the Empire State Building, MoMA, The Guggenheim, The Statue of Liberty and a few others and is cheaper than buying them all separately.

Ah, it's called the City Pass.

I have no recommendations for accommodations, because my dad got our hotel for us with his Aeroplan Points.

  • I will check out that book raynes, I think it MIGHT be possible to get our friend who lives there to stand in line for us or with us. We might do a BIT of site seeing, but in all honesty I think were more interested in the vibe, eating, visiting people we know but have never met (that sounds weird), and maybe doing a bit of site seeing. Im not overly interested in the empire state building or statue of liberty to be honest. Thanks!
  • Good to know!

Just make sure you hit up China Town.  Canal St. is knock off purse heaven.

  • Hehe I will, though im not big on purses. We are waiting until October so that I can save up enough money for shopping.
  • I always send visitors who dont want to spend a fortune to the Empire Hotel. Great location and awesome hotel. rooftop pool and bar/club.
  • Awesome, I will check it out! Thanks punky!
  • Nebb- the rooms can be pricey.  But now that you are on Travelzoo, keep an eye out for it.  They have specials deals at the Empire a lot.  and a little tip- If you call them after you book, say something like its your anniversary or you are celebrating something and ask if you can be upgraded for free to a junior suite if available.
the suites (most of them) are really nice.
The decore is modern and warm.
Oh and I second the Gramercy.  My DH and I almost booked a room just for the fun of it a couple months ago when they had a great promotion.
