Re: Tell me about your job pollesque

  • I'm a Yeoman Second Class in the U.S. Coast Guard. Not exactly out there saving lives or anything, but I'm making sure those guys get paid. My first two years in the CG, I was doing Seach & Rescue, and I had an especially difficult case in which I lost a toddler on Christmas Day 2003, and that's when I decided it wasn't for me.

I love that there are rules that dictate everything I need to know about my job, I just need to know where I can find it. When I'm busy, it's awesome. Yes, deadlines can be stressful, but I flourish under pressure. It's when I'm bored that I find I get myself into trouble. Our busy season is April-October, so in the off-season, I'm literally having to make work for myself.

  • I'm a student in a PhD program. Right now, that means I get paid for taking classes and for being a TA. I spend most of my time in class, doing homework, teaching, and writing/grading exams for intro-level students. It's definitely not a 9-5 job (I probably work 60-70 hours per week), and my stipend is tiny, and actually, I kind of hate it. But I will be done with classes in less than a year, and on to doing research (and teaching) which I really love.

  • I am an insurance broker, personal but training to be commercial, I guess my actual role is call Commerical Insurance Advisor. Days are busy and long but I enjoyish my job.

I would much rather be a stay at home wife and work part time walking dogs or something fun like that.
  • I work in pediatric clinical research as a study coordinator. My background and education is actually in social research but I found a job here first and I generally enjoy it.

The people I work with are great. There is a lot of mutual respect and appreciation that you don't always find in the workplace. Most of the families I work with are very nice and I have managed to develop a relationship with some of them over the years. A few do make me crazy though and can be difficult to work with.

Most of the kids i work with aren't that sick. However, I do screen our entire clinic population so there are a lot of tragic stories. My job can be depressing at times for this reason. It's also very hard to deal with families who are making choices that negatively impact their child's health. One of the studies I do is on high blood pressure and a lot of it is obesity related. Some families really try to adjust their child's diet while others obviously don't care.

We're planning on moving out of state in about 18 months and at that point I'd like to get back into social research.

  • I am a manufacturing engineer in the aviation field. I work on nonconformance and emergent issues in the factory.

The are sending me back to school for a manufacturing engineering degree. I have no idea how I got my job the company trains everyone but my mentor told me to get the degree if for nothing more than the fact I would make more money.

I'm a post doctoral associate.  Really, that means I got my Ph.D. and am continuing to work as a scientist.

I do cancer research - particularly with a protein and how it functions in healthy cells and gets all messed in cancer cells.  If you know how it's messed up, then you can fix it.

Shameless AW - you can read my blog (link in sig) where I talk a lot of what I do on a daily basis and different science topics.

EDIT: Do I like it?  I liked my projects more and my environment more in my last lab.  I don't fit in this lab very much.  I do have a hell of a lot of freedom with my schedule and I love presentations.  I plan to either go into industry or publishing by the end of the year.  I'd love to write books about science topics that real people can understand.  It's so interesting and it feels like only some people get it.  It doesn't have to be that way.

I'm in logistics for the consumer division of a massive beautycare company.  Yes, this means I get free makeup and the like every now and then, which is wonderful.  I can also move to another country or department after putting in my time, which I would very much enjoy (though FI has no desire to ever leave the good ole US of A.)  Oh, and they'll pay for grad school if my performance reviews at work are good enough and if I get an acceptable grade in each class.
The red tape, however, is mind-numbing.  I feel like I can't get any long term projects really rolling.

  • I'm a freelance reality tv producer, I mainly work in post production. I mostly work on docu-soap style shows, but I've pretty much done every kind of show. When people complain about "producers manipulating the footage" they are talking about people like me.

I really love my job, it's stressful at times, but I love that I change jobs all the time. It's hard to be bored. And I love TV, so it's nice to basically watch TV all day.

The only things I don't like about it are, since I'm a freelancer, there's no health care, no paid vacation, no paid sick days. Your taxes are a bitch and a half. But the freedom is a nice trade off.

Poli-I actually know quite a few psychologists that are now TV producers! Working in the field with these "characters" requires a lot of the same skills as being a therapist!

H and I own our own business doing residential design/drafting, so I design and draw house plans. I tend to do the more technical side of things and H does more of the design side.

I love being self employed and working from home but I don't love the work that I do. There's not really a specific reason I am just not really passionate about it or anything.
If I was to do it all over again I would go into graphic design or interior design.

The biggest thing that I dislike about being self employed is that people (mostly family members) tend to think that we don't have real jobs or that we don't really work.

  • I work as a microbiologist at a med device company. My time is spent coordinating product testing, consulting on any new products or changes to existing products, internal and external audits, and testing the controlled environments, and other random crap not worth mentioning.

I love my boss and coworker (we only have 3 in this function at this particular site) , but a big downside is I HATE doing the environmental testing. The cleanrooms are packed with people and it is annoying trying to fit around some of the tight spaces.
  • I'm an architect. Right now I work for a small firm doing commercial work, mostly tenant work. I really enjoy most aspects of my job, and a lot of time the work is challengine to get the client exactly what they want within their budget. It makes me happy to see a client happy with the work we have done.

  • I'm a graphic designer working in the corporate advertising department of a semi-large midwest grocery chain.

I love my job because there is a large variety to the kind of work I do (some days I'm doing flash animations, other days I have to go to the print shop to proof a giant center aisle banner etc.). The only downfall to my job is that I'm a contractor and thus do not get all the employee perks (like paid vacations).

I'm actually working to change my contractor status now - I've applied to a couple other employee positions within the company and already had interviews. I'm really hoping to switch to E-Commerce and get a little bit more into the web design end of the business.

  • I'm a SAHW. I battle some wicked anxiety issues so for now my being at home is the right thing for us. Eventually I hope to go back to doing photography and photo retouching work or get into freelance writing.
  • Daria, that's so cool! I know I hear a lot of people talking about shows like that must be scripted, but I totally believe that some people are wacky enough to provide enough fodder for the shows. ETA: I didn't realize how many different kinds of graphic designers we have in here! Very cool.

  • I'm a Latin teacher and I've been at my school since getting out of college.  I love my kids--I get lots of families coming through where I get every child in the family.  This year is going to be tough because some of my first families are graduating their last children.  I know that I will cry at graduation.  I know it.  I love most of my colleagues and have only worked for two principals, both pretty good ones actually.  I enjoy working with most of my parents.

This year, I do have something I don't like--some of my kids are in some pretty awful home lives.  One wouldn't get to school if the head football coach didn't bring him to school every day.  His wife also feeds this boy several times a week--I've given him my lunch before too.  Another student has an extremely unsupportive mother.  He actually talked about suicide a couple of weeks ago because she told him he was worthless.

If I lose this job (God forbid), I will probably go help a friend start up her party planning business.  I've sponsored the prom the past several years and I'm pretty good at it.
  • There are a lot of people here with really cool jobs. Wtb ModAnna or the microbiologist's (sorry, forgot the SN already!) jobs.

Right now, I'm a bank teller. I hate it; mostly because the company's schtick is "agressive friendliness!!!!!!" and it's completely counter to my personality. I like the technical stuff, the super smiley cheerful bs and having 100 exceptions to every rule drives me up the wall though.

  • College professor - teach public speaking and mass comm.  Used to advise interns working in a radio station or TV station for a semester.

Like:  I only work about 38 weeks a year.  And the weeks I work, I work less than 40 hours:  30 hours in the fall, 30 hours in the spring, 23 hours in the summer.  I do a whole lot of charity and community work outside of my job.

Don't Like:  Faculty used to have a "say" in things and now the administrators make all the decisions with no input from faculty.  At all.  And because "input" would mean we'd have to go to two more meetings per month, the other faculty members don't want it because they don't want to go to meetings.  Sigh...
  • I am an accountant for a high end construction company.  I'm also the only employee.

The things I like about my job:  I set my own hours, I wear whatever I want to work, I schedule things how and when I want, I work out of the owner of the company's home which is only 5 minutes from my house.

The things I don't like: not getting paid on time, the instability in the housing market at the moment (even though our company is doing fine, it still scares me), sometimes its TOO quiet in here, how the boss thinks I'm available when he needs me, including nights and weekends. How sometimes its really boring but thats my own fault because I work really fast and run out of things to do.

I also have a degree in health care so if I ever get sick enough of this (or want to work part time) I can do that to shake things up.

  • I have my Master's in School Counseling and after 2 + years i have still not been able to find a position in that field.

For the past year and a half i have been working at a homeless shelter. First as a case manager and now as an employment counselor.
Pros: Helping clients find employment which hopefully leads to finding permanent housing.
Cons: The crap pay and having to sit in front of a computer all day. Not all of my clientsactually want to work so the fact that i have to beg clients to participate in my program sucks.....
