Military Brides

Officiant said what?

So my friend is getting married at the end of next year and is planning long distance. She talked with an officiant yesterday who said " Since your military I usually wait a week to submit the license just in case" *wink, wink* She didn't know how to respond. Is that normal or is this guy a nut?

FYI she's marrying a marine

I feel like that would be a better policy in Vegas at a wedding chapel, not for a couple planning a year in advance.  Britney Spears would have avoided a whole bunch of trouble if she could have called up the next day and said, "Whops, don't process that paperwork!  We didn't mean to get married!"

I don't think there's ever a reason to pay to fly an officiant somewhere - there are tons in each location.  She should go on her local board and ask them for recommendations.

The officiant for us (or at least me) is a big deal. Its a friend's grandpa. We're thinking about getting married at the beach which is about 2-3 hours from where he lives. but I wouldn't want anyone else to do it. I trust him

If she's in Southern California tell her to call Reverend Michael Cartwright. He's a retired Marine and super awesome!

How RUDE!!! I would definitely find a new officiant....

Wow. That's rude. I would have "politely" gone off on him. That's just awkward... and choosing him now, I would fear he would say similar things at the alter. -_-
  • edited December 2011
He was probably just trying to be funny - not that he did a good job of it. As everyone else has said, it was very rude no matter what. He's probably alluding to the fact that it's "commonly known" (sacasm there) that "most" military marriages won't last/are shotgun weddings. Which is totally untrue.

She might just want to explain to him that his response upset her - and why! - and that she wants to have a amiable relationship with him, as he is officiating the wedding! If she's uncomfortable with him officiating, then she has every right to ask someone else, given the disrespectful nature of his comment.
