DH proposed July 4, 2010, and we were married January 16, 2011. Since our relationship was long distance, we decided on a shorter engagement. I only had 6 months, so I started in on the planning right away!
  • We got engaged in July 2011. Our original wedding date was October 2012, but we've pushed it back to October 2013 (long story).

Right after we got engaged and everyone had absorbed the news, we started discussing our budget. Once we had the budget figured out, I started looking at Pinterest and TK for ideas. I didn't start *actively* planning until February 2012, when we reserved our venue. Once I knew where we were having it, I could solidify colors, menus, the style of dress I wanted, and our cake.

Thankfully, I hadn't purchased anything except STDs when we changed our date. Now that we're having it in a different city/venue, we've made some changes to our colors and such.
  • I remember you as well and I hope you start posting regularly!

We had about a year long engagement and the first thing we did was decide on how many guests we wanted and booked a venue that could accommodate that number.

    And congrats!

I waited 4 months to start planning and will have had a 10 month engagement.
  • My grandma told me you're not supposed to congratulate the bride because it supposedly sends the message that you didn't think she'd be able to "catch" a man, so I'll just say "How exciting!"

As far as your question, we got engaged at the end of October or beginning of November (big argument in our house), but we'd already set a date at that point so we pretty much started right away.  We knew we had a huge guest list so we needed to find a venue large enough that was available on the only and only day we could get married.  I bought my dress at the end of January for our December wedding.
  • We were engaged in October and waited until after the holidays to start planning. I suppose it really depends how far away the date you choose is.

  • We got engaged Jan of 2011, getting married October 2012. We did a lot of tentative planning, but because we moved we didn't want to make anything definate until we were settled in. I didn't do any real planning until October of 2011, so 10 months.

    Congrats!!!

I got all the big things nailed down by month 2 then sat on them for months. I would go into planning mode then sit for months again. We had an 18 month engagement. I took my time, but did the big things because i wanted certain vendors who get booked fast.

  • Congratulations pretty girl!
I actually had a super long engagement (28months) because I was still in school, family drama...etc. We didn't set out date until 3 months after. I was fine with it, since I'm so young I didn't even think about weddings, marriage...etc. until I had to so I took a really really really really long time to figure out what I really wanted (Everything looks so pretty and adorable! But oh wait, they don't all go together). I'm glad I had a long engagement though, this gave us time to seriously think about how to become a great husband and a great wife. Now I'm getting married in 10 days! Just looking forward to actually start life together as a married couple.

  • We got engaged in August and I didn't start planning until December for our June wedding.
  • OP, that is a crazy wedding story!  What a miserable (lack of) reception.

DH proposed October 14, 2009; we married nine months later, on July 24.  We got right to work nailing down the venue, the officiant and the photographer, which were all in place by early December.  We signed with the caterer in January. I purchased my dress in February.

Best to you and your FI!

I'm a little late to this but congrats!  I got engaged in January and our wedding is in June 2013.  We both wanted a summer wedding and to wait until I finish grad school (May 2013) so June was a good fit for us.  We have our venue, DJ, and photographer booked.  I also bought my dress in March.  Haven't really done anything recently, but I probably should start looking into florists, makeup artists, a JOP and a hotel block.
  • Congratulations!

I don't think we waited very long at all. We knew we needed to book a reception hall quickly because of the time of year we wanted to get married and the size of my family. I found my dress a few months after we were engaged. We were engaged for a year and 8 months. I do not recommend an engagement that long.
  • We got engaged in April this year., we booked our venue 2 months later. I immediately started at looking at ideas and pictures online, but I didn't seriously start looking for places until a month or so after. We will have been engaged almost 17 months at the wedding.

I think it depends on what is important to you. We wanted to book a place so we knew the cost and what we needed to save, etc. We have looked at few other vendors, but haven't booked anything else. (Our reception site is our ceremony site and they provide food and the cake).

I will probably start dress shopping in September (a year out) and register and send STD after the winter Holidays.

  • Way late to the party; but I'm not usually on in the evenings.

    CONGRATS!

We got engaged September 2009 and the wedding is this October (yes, a very long engagement, but we had big ideas and needed time to save).

We spent the first year or so tossing around ideas; just getting a feel for what we wanted and booked our venue in March 2011.  We had all of our ideas on paper so when the time came it was just a matter of execution.  We also did a lot of what I refer to as "ad hoc planning".  One of us would see something that would trigger a thought or idea and we'd just have random discussions; and usually settle on something.

Because we had such a long time and took a laid back approach to planning, it has been very smooth sailing.  We used TK checklist as a basis and added or adjusted things as we needed.  It worked very well to a. keep us on track b. give us a sense of what needed doing c. the timeline breakdowns helped us not get ahead of ourselves.

    Good luck & happy planning.

  • Congrats!

We got engaged in May and are planning a September 2013 wedding (so 16 months).  We had our venue booked within a month and we've been planning a lot of the big stuff.  We're moving and have some family stuff coming up so we're trying to take care of as much now as we can in anticipation of a crazy year.  I think it all depends on what works for you and your fiance!
  • Engaged on Saturday, booked the church and venue on Monday. Only a 6 month engagement here!
  • Engaged: December 25
Married: December 18 (engaged almost one year)

I got my dress in January, ordered invitations in August, flowers & BM dresses sometime that fall.  Cake was probably ordered late summer.
  • Wow! Thank you so much for all of your replies! It is so incredibly helpful to just know what other people's wedding planning flow was like! You guys are awesome!

  • Hi! Lurking from The Bump. We got engaged May 29 and married Sept 24, so just shy of 4 months. Wouldn't have had it any other way! (And we'll have a newborn on our first anniversary!) We had the venue booked a week later. We didn't have to skimp or forgo anything b/c of a short engagement. Everything was perfect. Congrats on your engagement and happy planning :)
