Cake!

I know cake prices vary from place to place, but do you think it would be reasonable to budget $1.50 - $2.00/person for cake? FI was best man in a wedding where the cake cost $900 (it was from Oakmont). I personally don't really like cake and Im not sure I've ever actually ate the cake at a wedding, so I am trying to convince him that we can budget for less (for 150 people). What can I expect to pay? Any ballpark would be helpful, because obviously you can get cake for over $1000, but that's not what we're going for.

I honestly don't know about cake budgets, but you can do it cheaper by having a smaller cake to cut and then ordering sheet cakes made with the same filling/batter to serve your guests.

That's what I was thinking about proposing...I actually love Shop n' Save Cakes (is that sad?) and I can figure out a price for a sheet cake there. Im still just not sure how much a smaller one would be.

Costco has pretty good sheet cakes as well.

How about a cupcake tower? I'm haven't priced them out, but I would hope they were more reasonable than a fancy cake (and cute!)

I had a bad experience with Oakmont bakery when setting about a tasting so I am a little put off with them. They wanted to charge me an extra $62 on top of the $75 delivery charge because our reception is at the zoo. Also, for your tasting you get one cake and one filling, if you want to try more then you have to pay for it. I went with Bethel Bakery. I have always loved their cakes. I went with the smaller size of the 3 tier cakes and used 3 back up cakes. My guest list will be about 175. The larger of the 3 tier cakes with less back ups cakes would have cost $150 more. Altogether my cake cost $640 including the delivery charge. If you get creative with cake size you can save a lot of money. Also, Bethel uses round cakes for back ups so your guests won't know the difference. I have heard good things about Lincoln bakery in Bellevue too.

Getting a smaller cake and a sheet cake for the back is the way to go. We booked Autumn's Cakes (she is awesome!). We ordered a three- tier cake and a sheet cake for the back. It will serve a total of 125, but we are going to add more sheet cake slices if needed (we are inviting around 160, so we'll se how many rsvp). She also throws in a free 6 inch heart shaped cake for the honeymoon! So for 125 total slices and the little honeymoon cake, our total is $300! MUCH better than $900! Now of course, pricing depends on what kind of icing you get, fillings, etc. But check her out, she is amazing! Super nice too.

Cupcakes are very reasonable, I've found a place that is about $1 for basic and $2 for gourmet cupcakes. I am going to try them next month I'm hoping they are good because I like the idea of a cupcake tree.

My friend was on a tight budget for her wedding so she did cupcakes for her wedding "cake" and put them on a tower to look like a cake. She got a small cake to cut at the wedding and then put that in the freezer to save for the first anniversary. The cupcakes were really good and easy to serve.

signature desserts does packages. for $429 you can get a cake that serves 120 people, 8 other cakes/pies/desserts and 6 dz cookies. we added on more cookies, which rounded out the total to about $600. when you do this, the cake can be sliced and left on the table so that everyone can choose whether they want wedding cake or one of the other desserts. we ate our wedding cake for a month after the wedding, srsly! it was more cost effective this way, and since neither of us like cake, we didn't care that the slices wouldn't be served at the place settings and liked that people would have a choice. it worked out well! i know there are a bunch of girls that have gone this route and been happy with it.

Thank you for saying that. When I talked to Oakmont, the lady made it seem like 62 was the delivery charge. She said nothing about it being 62 on top of 75. I'm going to call her today and leave a message about it.

I don't like that she didn't tell me.

Thanks ladies! This was really helpful, because a lot of the places don't have prices, and I feel stupid emailing people just to find out that their prices are WAY over what I want to pay for cake. I'll check out Signature Dessert, because I love the idea of a package with other desserts and I'll also check out Autumn's Cake, because I have heard great things about her.

I like the idea of cupcakes...I love Vanilla and Dozen, but they're way expensive for every day stuff, so I thought cupcakes would be more expensive.

I personally think Oakmont Bakery is overrated...not just for weddings but for everything...its good, but not really better than other places, and way more expensive. I can't believe the extra fees they tack on...that's just ridiculous!

I too did not want to spend a grand on a cake and the cheapest I could find was $2.75 a slice. I tried cake at Potomac Bakery, I think their base price was something like $2.50 - $2.75 a piece. It was good cake, but I ended up going with a really small bakery based out of Charleroi (about 25 miles south of the city) called Celebrations by Janet Rands. I paid something like $450 for a 4 tier cake and it was FAN-FREAKING-TASTIC! I am still getting compliments on how great our cake was. She is really fantastic to work with and I highly recommend checking her out. I believe she will also do a smaller cake and then a sheet cake as well.

mm462, The extra charge was because of our venue. Be sure to ask them about that because if they have to deliver the cake after a certain time they will charge you for it. The paying for tasting really put me off though.

That's great to know! I work with the community in Charleroi and go down quite frequently...the people down there rave about her cakes, but not so much the rest of her baked goods...I'll check her out next time I go! I wonder if she would transport it to Edgewood though

I've never had anything else besides our cake from there. I know that she does travel into the city. I think her travel fee is around $25 or so and I wouldn't worry about it getting damaged during travel because she transports the cake with the layers apart and puts them together once she is on location. You can tell her Trisha recommended her. If you call beforehand, she will make you a small cake to take home and try! So good!

There is a cake designer that willactually make you a fake cake for your pics and you can get a sheet cake to serve.

She made us a fake cake for the pics, she made a small matching cake for our 1 year anniversary and then we bought a large sheet of cake to serve.

I will get the price if you are interested.. I have to look it up
