Since its TMI Tuesday.. :P

Anyone have a good place to go for a brazillian wax?

I'm thinking about going for my first one.. but I am a complete baby and way scared.  I want to go to someone experienced that will make me feel comfortable during one of the most uncomfortable experiences I can think of.

Also, any tips?

No, but I really want to hear this answer too... and I'll add my own question.

If I want to have it done for the November wedding, should I try it out like now? And then do it again in a month or so?

I have heard that The Refinery near the U of M campus is good.  I've also heard you should do it in steps... like a partial wax first and then later a full wax.

PS. My whole body hurts just thinking about this.

LOOOOOOOOOOOOOVE The Refinery. Make sure you sign up for their e-mail list. Every Monday they send out the special deals for the week. There's always a deal for $5 off a Brazilian wax for one day that week.

I'd suggest starting as soon as you can, so your body gets used to it. The first couple of times weren't tons of fun, but it's not really bad at all after that.

I went to The Refinery on the Wednesday before our wedding. You definitely want to allow yourself a couple of days afterward to be a little sore in the area. Oh, and take 2 ibuprofen about 30 minutes before your appointment.

Ha! I'm way to chicken, I'll just shave the night before w/a new blade. I love the new photo in your siggy, though, DC!

Dc Prep obviously since you have done it several times - it works right? I've hear waxing doesn't do much and you have to do it for years before the hair actually thins.

What are some of the benefits of waxing? No pumps or razor burn?!?

Don't have a recommended place, but I do have some notes:

    • Steph, I would start now if you want to get going on it for a November wedding.
    • It hurts. like. HELL. Especially the first time or two. It does get better after that, but rather than spend a ton of moolah to maintain a brazilian, I got a groupon for laser hair removal and I swear by that, seriously.
    • I always get really unsightly bumps when I wax the bikini area. It ain't cool. Not everyone is that sensitive, though.
    • Don't go during or right before your period! The pain will be much worse.

Tell us about laser hair removal, Debbie?  I heard that hurts a lot, too.

I recommend John Zeches for waxing.  He was recommended to me by two of my friends and did a really good job. I only did it once (before my boudoir pictures) but his prices were really good, he owns the business so he doesn't accept tips, and he made me feel really comfortable.  Well, as comfortable as a stranger putting hot wax on your lady business can actually be.  :)

You can set up an appointment on his website - johnzeches.com

I didn't get a full brazillian, and it did hurt...but only right as we was ripping off the strip.  That hurt like hell, but as soon as it was done it didn't hurt any more.

I'd like to hear more about laser hair removal!  I heard that it can take several times to actually work...is that true?  And did it hurt?

Definitely schedule your wax for mid-cycle. Pop 2-3 ibuprofen 30 minutes before your appointment. Remember that your esthetician has seen a thousand vajayjays so no need to feel self-conscious about yours.

Before I moved out to the boonies, I used to see Farah at Glo Skin Spa regularly - she was fantastic.

Yes, I found that I had ZERO BUMPS after a Brazilian. If I decide to shave instead, I usually regret it a few days later :(

At The Refinery, the woman who did my waxing (I think her name was Danielle) gives you a free sample thing of Finipil, which wards off bacteria in the area, slows hair regrowth, etc. The key is to use that after you bathe for a few days. And then you can start the gentle exfoliating in that area, just to prevent ingrown hairs.

Honestly, having a Brazilian was a GODSEND for our wedding. We went on our minimoon afterward, and I can't put into words how great it was to not have to worry about shaving/stubble/ingrown hairs during those... ehm... INTIMATE days :)

DC Prep I love it! TMI tuesday to the max!! FI also likes when I save but my hair grows so fast I'm usually only smooth for like 12 hrs. :( I may have to look into this.

Although I think I have a high pain tolerance and have 2 tattooes is very painful places (top of each foot) thinking about this makes me whince!

@Enchanted and MN_Jen: Laser hair removal does take multiple times. I've now had my armpits and sideburns done 3 times and my sideburns are completely gone (not that they were all that crazy, but I wanted the hairline higher) :). My pits are smooth. It's super awesome because I HATED shaving them.

They say it'll take about 6 sessions in all. Each one lasts about 5-10 minutes - you're in, you're out. I've only ever spent the money when it's through a groupon or similar deal that gets you a bundle off. It's pretty pricey if you're paying in full for it.

The pain is nothing compared to waxing. It's truly not a big deal. Although I'm guessing it's a wee bit worse on the bikini line (have yet to go in for my first appointment).

I agree with all of the Brazillion tips so far. I have one to add though, the esthtician I see told me that it helps to use your hands to hold your skin taught by pulling towards your head under your belly button. It seems to help. Also the hair does stop coming in as frequently but I have found that since I stopped going all the ground I made with regular waxing is gone... Frown

I never got any ingrown hairs after waxing, I have found since I stopped waxing that I am getting them like crazy from shaving... hmm I am  seeing a trend maybe I should suck it up and start going back. I went to Simonson's for mine, in Maple Grove. I saw several different technicians but ended up sticking with Heidi, she gave a discount if you came back within 6 weeks because it isn't as much work.

I guess I stopped because it just seemed like even after a year I would really only stay smooth for a few days and then I would have to start growing it back out again right away... I love how much smoother it feels I just wish it would last longer. It really isn't that bad, only the few strips right on the important stuff hurts like you wouldn't believe... but it is over very quickly.

Now you ladies have me thinking about trying. My most recent tattoo was six hours in the chair, and I could do that no problem...

I am definitely thinking about trying this soon too to prepare for next year's wedding!  Thanks for all of the helpful information and tips. :)

Yes, pulling the skin helps TONS!

And seriously, if you can get a tattoo, you can get a brazilian. I mean, I don't have any tattoos, but I can imagine that needles repeatedly sticking your skin for 6 hours is a lot worse than waxing for 10-15 minutes.

Seriously, go to Danielle at The Refinery. They only charge $30 for a brazilian, or $25 if you book with the special e-mail they send on Mondays. DOOOOO ITTTTT!!! :)

I am thinking that I may have to go try it. I have heard horror stories though about how terribly ackward it is which is the only reason I have avoided it. I'm not quite sure about how I feel about so ahem exposed.

  • edited December 2011
Usually they give you a towel that they move around which really does help you keep from feeling too exposed. It isn't great but it is quick. It is worth it.

I go to spalon montage in Woodbury , it only like $55 there and the girls are great. I use Paige, she is super quick and no nonsense. Plus she is a perfectionist ! They know what they are doing. If you are worried about the pain go just after you time of the month , your pain threshold is higher , and take two ibuprofen before you go in. enjoy :P
