After party?

If we have an after party, are we expected to pay for the alcohol?  (The after party would be at a local bar.)

Re: After party?

  • If you're sending out invitations for it then IMO yes.

However if you spread it by word of mouth that you're probably going to X bar and people are welcome to join you then no, I don't think it's expected.

  • Thanks for the advice.  No invites; just word of mouth and website.   Is posting it on the website appropriate?

It's all in how you word it.  Say something like "Following the reception, the bride and groom will be going to X bar.  Anyone who would like to join is welcome."  Don't say something like "We invite you to continue the party at X bar at 10 o'clock."

  • We are having an after party at a local pub where we are paying for late night food but everyone is on their own for drinks, so we actually made a Facebook "event" page and put that right on there.  I didnt want it on a wedding page, didnt feel right for some reason, but FB is so laid back its pretty much like word of mouth.

  • As long as you spread the invitation by word of mouth then no one would expect you to pick up the tab.  It would be generous to buy the first round if you like though!
  • After one wedding we hit a night club.  I'm very close to the bride so I knew she wanted to do this but basically at the reception we just let people know we were headed to the club if anyone wanted to meet up there.  Everyone was still dress for the wedding and they let the WP in without paying cover.  We really didn't stay long though.  What we didn't take into account in the planning was that after the Ceremony and reception we were all kinda tired.
