e-rings and wedding rings...

I was reading something on another thread (like two weeks old now) and someone mentioned that rings can cost up to $5k...we were in a very different position since my ring was a family ring and so I have no idea how much rings cost (we only had to buy FIs wedding band).

So this is completely anonymous and I swear I won't judge...but how much did your rings (just your e-ring and wedding band) cost combined, if you know I guess...no need to comment if you don't want obviously, I just want to get an idea of what most guys spend...genuinely out of curiousity.

also, this is a post and run, I am tired but I will read responses tomorrow...

The ring I love/ want is $2,300 ish. Depends on the diamond you get set in it but the setting alone is $1500. Gah! I feel like thats a lot for just a setting. I did try on a $17k Tiffany ring though, that was fun.

ETA: I voted for the 2-3k one just so that I don't have to click "view poll" eachtime.
  • My e-ring was just under $4,000...it's a Leo Diamond from Kay (and WOW is it sparkley!!!)  That was all FI though, he spoils me.  He picked it all on his own.  My wedding band is not a Leo, and is about $600, the lady said we could get it for less during a sale.  It looks so good with my e-ring...I can't wait!

  • It really can vary a ton depending on the quality/size of your center stone.

Personally, I don't know that clarity and color are a huge deal unless you're going above half a carat.

  • I'm probably WAY out of the norm on this one. I'm not gonna give specific numbers, but you could most likely buy a nice luxury car for the cost of my rings. However, part of the price was that FI completely designed the ring himself.

  • Did you know...in 1950 a 1 carat E ring cost $399? I wish I could take our money and go back to the 50's.
  • Inflation sucks. Money suck. :(
  • Wow!  That's a lot to spend on rings.  I know my BF could afford to buy a really nice ring, but honestly, from what little online shopping I've dont, I think we could get a set I really like for around $2500 or less (<--clicky).  I am not a big jewelry person, so I feel like I would be majorly uncomfortable having anything more than that on my finger.

Speaking of costs back then, my 'something old/borrowed' will be a diamond and pearl brooch that my grandpa bought for my grandma in 1945 when he was in Japan during WWII.  We still have the original box and receipt and it cost him $350.  We've had it appraised (for insurance purposes, definitely not going to sell it) since then and it's definitely a LOT more than that now.  If only I could find something that nice for that price nowadays...

  • A better question would probably be what percentage of his income did FI spend on the rings; obviously $5k on an e-ring is not a big deal for someone who makes $200k/year while it would be a hell of a big deal for someone who makes $30k/year, so I'd find it more interesting to know what percentage of income was spent on it.

  • Excellent point, vegas.

FI did follow the traditional 2 month rule, and then spent a little more.  It was quite a chunk of change for him, but he had been saving for a long time and knew what he was willing to spend.
  • Dh spent less than 1 months pay on my rings (less than $2k). We originally were looking in the $8k range but I was very uncomfortable with that amount of money. I'm very happy with what I have :)
  • agreed vegas. I bought ben a really nice watch which was $5k and it took me two years of serious budget magic to save for it.
  • He picked it out on his own and I don't know what he spent... He has hinted but I don't know if I want to know! It was paid off that same day though and that made me happy!

  • My e-ring was about 6 and since it didn't come with a wedding band we had to buy a custom made band (ouch) for about $1,300.  Someday I want another band for the other size, it's some bling!  :)
  • Well, my stone is heirloom and DH paid for the setting.  I think it was $1500?  $2000?  I forget.  The whole thing appraised at 7k.  My wedding band was $300 but that's because I got it at the flea market (in NY...it's all vendors from the diamond district in the city).

  • E-ring was $450 I think.  That was just for the setting and the placement of my grandmother's stone.
Wedding bands were melted and re-alloyed family gold from dh's family (class ring, grand parent's wedding bands and other random items)  the cost of the re-alloy to white from yellow gold was $200, then the custom made bands were $470 for both his and mine.  So I guess the total was $1120 for all three rings, two of which are custom made (and holy cow DH's is big and chunky), and we did not have to buy any stones because the melted rings had 13 stones in them that we re-perposed for our bands.
The only downside that we did not notice first is that the daimonds in my wedding band are scratched.  I hope to one day have the replaced with ones that are not.
  • I have to agree with Vegas on this. My DH does make a good living, and he also has inheritence. He knows what he can afford ad what he cant.

  • Wow...so apparently whatever I read in the other strand was really appropriate since so many of you chose +5000.

My ring is part of that 'pre-inflation' time period because it is over four generations old and there is no way that anyone in the 1800s was paying that much for a ring in my family!  I have no idea how much they paid for it but I guess I should go get it appraised...
  • I think together my E-ring and band cost about $9K... but that was less than two months salary for H.

  • Wow, my e-ring was about 600. Given it was on sale at the time. And I haven't bought my band yet, but i figure its going to be about 400. I guess I'm cheap! :)

  • I, too, had no idea! My e-ring and FI's band are family pieces. I went out and bought a band for myself and it was $300 after tax. I thought that was even pricey, haha. Then again, we are both ummm "poor" hahhaha. So yeah.

I would never spend more than 2k, just on principle, even if we had the money.
  • My e-ring cost way much more than I wanted him to even think about spending. But he did it all on his own, and its gorgeous. The wedding band we picked out together, but he told me upfront that he had a budget in mind and I was not allowed to go under a certain amount. He's weird like that.

  • I beat BF down on price. He wanted to spend $5k to $7k. I was like, no way am I wearing something that expensive. We purchased a lovely set with a Lannyte center instead of a diamond for just over $2k. While that's less than one month's gross income, it still required some saving (taxes and bills are expensive!).
  • We're using my great-grandmother's diamond in a new setting.  The setting I like is around $1400, and I assume approximately another $1000 for a wedding band.

He's a law student so he doesn't have any income, so it's a lot of money but he's budgeted for it.  I'm probably going to end up paying for the wedding rings.  But there's no way we'd do the "2 month" rule - we figure out what we can budget for it, and that's what we'll spend.

  • My rings are moissanite, so they were $2,000 for the set. I imagine they'd be about 3 times as much if they were diamonds.

  • We lucked out. My grandmother gave FI my e-ring and wedding band and wouldn't let us pay her for them. My e-ring appraised for $5000 though. I didn't insure the wedding band, and I seriously doubt it would appraise for more than a few hundred dollars. It's just a white gold band with teeny tiny diamond chips.

  • My e-ring was alot. Last time i mentioned it i got called a liar and ripped a new one. My band needs to get custom made to fit e-ring. FI saw a band he liked the other day for 900. I agree with Vegas about the salary thing.

  • We actually didn't pick out a diamond and a setting separately. I got a vintage ring and the whole thing was just one price, stone included. (And ten little diamonds on the side.) We had a band custom made to fit flush with the e-ring, since if it ever had a band, I sure as hell didn't have it. We actually just picked that up today.

  • I voted based on the appraised value, but FI got the diamond from his mother and just put it in a new setting, like a few others here, so he didn't pay that much. Which was good because I told him I wanted either a Canadian polar bear diamond if it was new (so I didn't have to worry about blood diamonds) or a vintage stone for the same reasoning, basically. We joke that I got an engagement laptop too, since he had saved more than he needed for the setting.
