Hotel room blocks?

Im looking to reserve a room block in New Orleans for my wedding March 17,2012. I've visited a couple of hotels but they are asking $180/night! I'm not sure who is going to want to spend that much :( Where ever i get the room block i am going to want to book a suite there too for me and the girls to get ready the day of and for me and my future hubby to spend the night of in so i would like the suites to be really nice too. any ideas?

March is convention season in Nola, so 180 is a normal price for that time. We are using Hotel St Marie and the Best Western French Quarter for our room blocks. We will have a suite at our venue so that wasn't a concern. I don't know that you will find anything less than what you have been quoted in the Quarter.

Try the La Quinta Downtown. It's just 2 block from the Quarter.

March 17 its St. Patty day plus like Queen Jane mentioned above convention season. You should try downtown and Warehouse district. Do it quick before all the cocnventions book their hotels

We have several room blocks for our February 11th wedding in the French Quarter.  The more reasonable prices we've found have been at the Richelieu hotel and the Whitney Wyndham.  The Whitney is not in the Quarter but only 2 blocks away and their sales manager (Rachel Tyndale) is lovely to work with.
we found them through www.hotelplanner.com. You enter your info and price range and hotels make you offers for room blocks.

The other thing I've found, is that you can totally negotiate these prices down, so don't just accept the first price you get.  We've negotiated all of our room blocks down so we have a range of rooms from $130 to $199.

For your suite, the Chateau Bourbon has a room called a petit suite which is $199 for quite a large space, though the bedroom is not separate.

Lastly, I would check with Iberville Suites, as they have suites in all price ranges.

I am same weekend- I lucked out with a reasonable price at the Hampton downtown- 1 block off of Canal.  I tried the La Quinta, but no one ever answered the phone.
There are no city-wides that weekend, so there is availability.  I went through the Visitors Bureau and got a lot of responses, but most were expensive.
    Good luck!

On bezlu's suggestion on Iberville Suites, just wanted to let you know that I just stayed there this past week and they are lovely.  That hotel also shares a lobby and amenities with the Ritz Carlton.  RIght now the rates are extremely reasonable, but I have no idea what they would be in March with the high demand.  Worth checking out.  Word of caution though, someone told me that Iberville is going to be bought out by Marriott soon, so you should confirm that.

Also, I recall reading in a previous recent thread a suggestion to look at the NO Visitors/Tourist website as there is an option to request rates and with one single request you will get responses from many hotels.  Haven't tried it myself, but that may help save some time and effort. Good luck!

    Bezlu, I just PM'd you.

To the OP, I have found it difficult to find reasonable room rates as well, and you would think that if you are giving the hotel 20-25 sold rooms that they would be more flexible, but my experience the past few weeks has been that they are giving me rates that are exactly what I can pull up on their website on my own.  It's rather embarassing.  Hopefully we can take some of Bezlu's advice and secure some cheaper rooms, I'll try the Whitney Wyndham and Richelieu as well.

FYI, one of the "better" offers I had was from the Bienville House for $169 (we blocked 20 rooms), and Monteleone for $185 (didn't go with them b/c I've read of their attrition clause).  The Prince Conti, St. Marie, and Place D'Armes (all part of the Valentino hotel group) were about $155, slightly cheaper, but not much.

Our wedding is Feb. 10th (day before Bezlu)...

We've run into a similar issue for our April 2012 wedding. Just like Kristina, we went with Bienville House, and also went with the Inn on Bourbon which was a little more than Bienville House. For my FH and our immediate family, we are renting a 4 BR house in the Garden District near the streetcar line. We are planning on being there for the week before the wedding, and it just makes much more sense. The house is fantastic, and we will save money both on lodging and food since we won't have to eat out every meal of every day! Good luck with the room blocks!

Monteleone had no attrition clause, I made sure to check!  Their rates were $199 I think for the weekend before, with a 2 night minimum if I remember correctly.

The Country Inn and Suites was $189.

The best rate I got was the Wyndham garden for $139, 2 night minimum.

Hmmmm I didn't think the Monteleone had an attrition clause, I had just heard that on here... shame on me for not looking in to it on my own.

Ya, I should add FI and I and my parents are staying St the HH Whitney for a week, and paying half what we would for a regular hotel.

We were able to book the entire Frenchmen Hotel and the people there are sooo very nice and accommodating. Marianne, the manager, has been extremely helpful. There are 27 rooms and a courtyard.

Thank you for all the responses! so it seem $180 isn't  outragous from the rates everyone is posting. I emailed the visitors bureau and got a response very quickly stating they would be more than happy to help. thanks for the advice! im just stuck on which suite to go with! lol!

Margaux we are Feb 11, Ceremony at St. Mark;s and Reception at the Bourbon Orleans Ballroom.  How about you?

Initially I was super stressed by the parades but now that I've asked A LOT of questions and gotten room blocks only within the French Quarter (because it might be diffifcult to enter through a parade route), I feel fine about the whole thing and I'm glad guests will get a taste of Mardi Gras.

I'm also getting married Feb 11 at the Montegut House in the FQ. I think the parades (which are all uptown) will be amazing for guests to experience. And regardless, it's not that hard to get around even with parades.

I have hotel blocks at the Omni ($199), the Wyndham and the Hampton Inn (Wyndham and Hampton Inn are $149-$159 I think).

When I booked the Monteleone last fall they did have an attrition clause that I had to sign and give my credit card for.  Maybe they've since changed their policy?

We had the misfortune of choosing the same weekend as the NCAA final 4... we could only find one hotel that would even TALK to us about blocking off rooms, out in Elmwood, and for $200/night with a 4 night minimum... I'm telling people they'll have better luck looking on their own.
