Getting in Shape

1 week workout fails

It happens every time to me. I start a diet and a daily workout routine. 1 week goes by without fail and then its all over. I fall off the diet and don't have the energy or focus to continue working out. Does this haapen to anyone else? Its happened every few months for the past year. I need to get in shape and want to lose 50 pounds before my wedding as I've gained quite of bit of comfort weight being with my fiance for the past 2 and half years. I have a year and a half which I think is sufficient time before the big day, but how do i stay on target? How do I keep myself going? Last month I did the 1 week workout again, and at the end of the week discovered I had gained 6 more pounds rather than lose anything, and its completely thrown me off! I want to keep going but I psych myself out, make excuses, I have no motivation! Can anyone offer any help? Any ideas?

  • I wouldn't pay attention to the scale.  I think that is common for many people, if they see any weight gain after eating healthy & exercising then they quit.  Gaining weight when you begin working out is not uncommon. If you have any way to have your body fat checked, I suggest that!  If not, weigh yourself on day 1 to get a starting weight & then weigh yourself every 2 weeks.  If you can't wait that long just hop on the scale one week later, same time, same day.  Push yourself through any road blocks...its hard, but a healthy lifestyle is more than just the physical aspect, but mainly the mental.  You have to be able to motivate and discipline yourself, as well as be determined to reach your goal.  If being fit & living a healthy lifestyle was easy, EVERYONE would do it & this board probably wouldn't exist.  So fight through the battles & understand that you will have off days, but as long as you are having 90% of good days, its ok to have an off day once in awhile.

WELL said! I haven't lost any weight in the past couple of weeks (if you noticed my weight loss tickler hasn't budged)  but I try my best to stay motivated and eat right-90% of the time and it has definitely paid off...I tried on and bought an XS top this week and couldn't friggin believe it! So although the scale hasn't moved my clothes continue to get looser. Believe me, I know it is hard but you have to push through it if you want to reach your goal -YOU CAN DO IT!
  • Have you ever watched Biggest Loser?  I don't think it's a coicidence that most (if not all) the contestants have some big emotional battle they have to conquer.  Be it a death of a family member, or a parents' divorce...food and laziness were their way of COPING.

One day it hit me like a ton of bricks: I was anxious ALL the time.  I decided to see a therapist and realized my levels of stress/anxiety weren't normal.  I also put 2 and 2 together and figured out the days I was most stressed were the days I often missed the gym or chose bad foods.

Everyone says you have to "eat right and exercise" but I think the 3rd element is often missed, and it's the biggest one!  You have to work on your mental health.  If you're depressed, stressed, anxious, sad, insecure, etc. figure out how to cope with those feelings FIRST.

It's backwards to think "I'l lose weight THEN feel good about myself".  You have to find peace, self-acceptance and self-love FIRST, then you're ready to tackle diet and exercise.

When I feel great about myself, it's SO much easier to eat clean (the only way to eat I think!) and put my running shoes on.  Good luck!

  • A piece of advice I got from this board to keep me motivated was I ask myself this when I don't feel up to working out--Have I ever worked out and regretted it afterwards?  100% of the time the answer is no.  Then I ask--Have I ever NOT worked out and regretted it?  100% of the time the answer is yes.  Thank you to WHOEVER said that because I am now on day 19 of P90X!

  • although u have about a year to lose 50 lbs that is still a lot and that is given that you are consistent. you have to make it your lifestyle. what do you mean you workout all week? do you mean 7 days a week and how long are these workouts?
Maybe you are overtired? The 6lbs could be water weight. Just make sure you watch what you eat because though you are exercising now you're probably more hungry therefore you are eating more especially if you are doing a lot of cardio.

I would start slow with 3 times a week then move to 5 days anything beyond that is too much. Make sure you are getting enough sleep, eating well and resting your body (days off from exercise) otherwise you might come down with a cold.

Just remember you have to burn more than what you are eating. Use this fitday.com to track down what your eating.
