Fall wedding - Khaki tacky?

FI and I have planned our wedding for October 9 of this year. It is an outdoor, back yard garden wedding at my parent's home in NC. The brides maids and MOHs are giong to be wearing this dress in "serene": http://www.davidsbridal.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/ProductDisplayView?storeId=10052&catalogId=10051&categoryId=-49998973&colorName=Serene&subCategory=-49998976%7c-49998975%7c-49998973&top_category=&catentryId=6108939

The wedding colors are the blue of "serene" and brown. My dress is somewhat elaborate, my grandmother is making it (I can't find a picture because the pattern is discontinued), but everything else is going to be REALLY simple.
FI and I are wanting to keep our budget as low as possible (under $1500) and because of that, have considered having the groom and his attendants wear khakis, brown shoes, long sleeved white shirts and brown ties.

My roommate says that khaki is spring-ish, and the attendants should wear brown suits. But the thing is, all of his attendants will still be in college and they're already driving 3 1/2 hours to get to the wedding, so I don't want to ask too much of them by asking them to purchase/rent suits.

So my question is: for my fall wedding, is khaki tacky?

  • I am doing khaki in late june, not because it is in style or not, because I love it.
You will be fine. it's your wedding!

  • The males' attire should match the formality of the females' attire.  If you have the girls in long dresses and your gown is rather elaborate, the guys should be wearing a tuxedo or a suit.  Since you're in a fairly mild climate, wearing a khaki suit would be fine but if they're buying a suit, dark may serve them better.

I never understand why people have no problem asking the girls to buy dresses, shoe, jewlery, etc  but balk at asking the guys to spend money buying a suit or renting a tux.

The guys will wear the suit many more times than the girls will ever wear the BM dress.

  • Ditto MOB ... the khaki by itself is not tacky, but it will look weird if the groomsmen do not match the formality of the bridesmaids or your own "elaborate" gown.

With satin ballgowns, then I think it would not look right if the men were in khaki pants and shirts. At the very least, have them wear jackets in addition to their planned attire. Navy blue sports jackets would look nice and would add some formality and polish to the wedding party. Look in department stores or maybe even thrift shops for nice sports jackets. And if you go this route, then I think I would look for blue ties that coordinate with the BMs' dresses, rather than brown ties. (The ties don't need to be the exact same blue color, just *coordinate*.): http://tinyurl.com/y8vzzpc

The men also don't *need* to be in brown even if brown is your wedding color. Black suits will match any color scheme, even if there is no black elsewhere in the wedding (because black is a neutral color). Do they already own black suits? If so, just ask them to wear those and white shirts, and buy them matching neckties. If not, see what the cost is to rent them, or look in department stores or places like Kohl's and Burlington Coat Factory and Syms. Again, check thrift stores and consignment shops. Some stores (Joseph A. Banks, I think, and maybe Men's Wearhouse) do BOGO sales where you can get two suits for the price of one.

Or, if your BMs have not yet purchased their dresses, then maybe look for less formal dresses - knee-length skirts and a slightly more casual fabric. Like an upscale summer dress. And tone down your own gown a bit. That way, groomsmen in fairly casual attire will not stick out so much.

  • Ew, no to brown suits.

I just saw a pic at the bottom of someone's post where the groom was wearing a khaki suit and the two of them were under a tree in the fall, with all the pretty fall leaves around them and it looked beautiful! Can't remember who's it was or where I saw it though...sorry!
