Not much of a question here, just sharing.
We care for a feral kitty who has lived in our complex longer than we have. We started feeding her in June 2009 when her previous caretaker moved away.
We haven't seen her in the last week (which isn't really unusual) but I noticed since this past Wednesday that she hadn't been eating her food during the day like she usually does. However, food would be gone by morning. I did a stakeout last night and planted a web camera. I found out who's eating the food, but it's not our feral kitty, Cali.
Today I'm going down to the city shelter to file a lost cat report and go through the cages. I really hate it, but FI is coming with this time me for moral support. (We had another homeless cat we cared for go missing last year. She wasn't feral, and I still hope that her original owner came back for her.)
Cali is really distrustful, and even though I've fed her every day for almost a year and a half, I can't get closer than 10 feet away from her (and that's a really good day). Here are a couple photos, taken from when I used to feed her at the park.

Anyways... I completely understand. I always say the cat isn't mine, but if she disappears, I'll be really sad! Good luck!
I also found a stray maybe 8 months ago. I always saw it in the parking lot in my apt. complex. She would meow at me but if I got close she ran away. Finally, one day she walked up, and I grabbed her. I figured if she didn't have fleas or anything she'd be easy to care for. Gave her a bath.. no fleas. She was just very skinny (bones sticking out skinny) with a flea collar on.
I figure the kitten was maybe 3-5 months old. I saw it outside all the time for almost a month, and if her owner was still around, they weren't feeding her. I tried to keep her, but my cat Shadow was SO on edge with the cat anywhere in the house. I was devastated, but luckily, one of my friends took her in. =]
We went to the city shelter and she wasn't there (no surprise). The good news is she's also not on the DOA list. I'm going to keep putting her food out and hope she comes back.

Thanks for the stories and encouragement!
