  If this were my circumstance, I would just do a non-photo STD.  STDs don't have to have pictures on them.  I sent out postcards that had a drawing of a pictogram on it.  It was a picture of a groom + a picture of a bride = a picture of a church.  They had our names underneath and the date.  I found them on weddingpaperdivas.com, they were cute and those I heard from, loved them.

  I don't know about photoshopping to make it look like you are together, could be weird and feels deceptive/fake. You are going to look back on these pictures and remember that you were apart during your engagement.
  
  I have three picture ideas for you.
  
  1. You take a photo of you leaning in for a kiss (let say lean to your right) and he does the same (lean to the left). Put them side by side on the save the date. The more different the background, the better! Embrace the long distance idea. Could write something like "We are waiting for the day to be together again and we want you to save the date when we can all be together" or whatever!
  
  2. Same concept of long distance. Pictures of you two on the phone. Maybe looking at a picture of the other? Could use an antique phone. Modern cell phones would great too because years from now, they will date the photo.
  
  3. AGAIN same concept! Picture that looks like a computer screen of the two of you Skyping. This is a photoshop job.
