Tears in the SS office

So Social Security office told me today that I CANNOT change my maiden name to my middle name. For this I have to go to the courthouse to have my name legally changed. Apparently starting this year it has to be noted on my marriage license to use maiden name as middle name. And apparently Nevada doesn't put it on the marriage license.

SO LAME! Now I have to go to the courthouse!

That's weird. I didn't need to do that.

i think you need to talk to someone else at SS.  when you get married you can legally change your name to anything you want to - you could be Joe Bob Apple Pie if you wanted to be.  i think you dealt with a misinformed government worker :)

Maybe I can call? I really don't want to go again--it is a 30 min+ drive from my house. They said something about as of January 1, 2010 they needed it noted on the marriage license itself. I don't know. I think I stopped listening bc I was crying!

    I don't think it is a mistake:

Social Security and the Department of Motor Vehicles will not allow a person to change their name
using the marriage certificate unless the new name is shown in the new name fields. These agencies
require you to get a court order to change your name after marriage.

It is just the lovely state of California!

ugh, California.  that seems pretty unfair.  what does the courthouse process entail?

Paperwork, paperwork paperwork. From what I have googled, there are about 5 forms to fill out and I have to have it ran in the newspaper for 4 weeks that i am changing my name. Then the judge signs off on it.

Sounds like it is prob going to take 6 weeks. UGH!

Also remember to check and see if you have to pay to file the name change with the court, as that is a huge bummer too.  I'm trying to change my son's last name, so I know that In AZ it costs $300 just to file the papers :(

Yah I heard it is like around $200 here. Just another factor! I'm leaning towards just leaving my name the way SSA changed it. I wanted to keep my maiden name, but it doesn't seem like it is meant to be! I just want to have a name!!

Hey D..... I was looking at the fee schedule for Kern and I believe you would have have to pay the $355 and then publication can be pricy depending on which paper. If you want msg. me on FB on Monday and I can give you some numbers.

Thanks Stinker! This may be the deciding factor! It is such BS. But I was going to be called Danielle Krause, so who really will call me by my middle name?!

I believe you have the correct info and this is not new. I tried to change my name after already being married (had kept my maiden name and then when we had our first baby I decided I should have his name, so we will all have the same name). I would have had to go through the court and pay like $400 to change it after already being married. Soc Sec and DMV have nothing to do with you changing your name. They just change your name on their docs (your ss card and drivers license) once you have already had your name change issued through the court. Let me know if you have any questions. I did finally do it and it was quite a head ache. This time when I get married I am taking his last name right from the get go!

If you do decide to do it...There is a paper in Stockton (I forget the name) that is way less expesive to post the name change in than the major papers like Fresno or Sac Bee.

Thanks for the info Kirsten. I think I am not going to go through all the work of changing my name at the courthouse. I will just say goodbye to my maiden name ahaha.
