Cinco De Mayo

Am I the only white person who doesn't celebrate this? I didn't even realize in was a BFD to people who aren't from Mexico but apparently in Mississippi it's huge and people love to get shitty drunk on this day. I have to work today and was told we should have a big 5/5 crowd.

I celebrate Polski Day today. It always falls on the same weekend as the Cinco De Mayo celebrations, but I'm Polish, and my mom's church started out as Polish, so today I had Polish sausage, sauerkraut, and povitiza bread. Plus we went to the parade and fair at my mom's church. And I'm wearing my Polska shirt right now...

  • I don't celebrate it either and really had no idea, other than seeing the posts on here, that it was 5/5. Ha.

  • I don't really do anything special to celebrate. TONS of people here do though.

I am making mexican food tonight though!
    image
  • Maybe I should have a margarita tonight-never had one

    Polski day sounds fun!

Mexican food is ALWAYS a party in my mouth.

  • Never had a margarita?! Blasphemy.  You should have one!
    image
  • It's a really americanized holiday.  Most Mexicans don't celebrate it and it's not "Mexican Independence Day" like so many people say.

But, I think people like a good excuse to get drunk.  Sooo... Cinco de Mayo is one of 'em.

I'd never had one before but it was freaking delicious. I was really disappointed we only got 1 and shared it.
  • I highly dislike Mexican food.  But, I love a nice iced, strawberry margarita!

If you ever want to try some Polish food besides Polish sausage, I suggest going online and ordering some povitica. It is delicious Polish bread, and Strawberry Hill (the link below) is our local shop. They have all different flavors, and every one I've tried is great! The loaves aren't cheap, but for an occasional splurge, yum!

And I LOVE Mexican food, but this is the one day a year I will NOT eat it. Today is reserved for Polish food for me!

    "The weekend" is my excuse.
  • Oh you guys. Buncha drunks. Kiss
  • FI and I were just talking about this.

Based on our friends FB statuses it seems like we are the only people celebrating the Derby over Cinco. I love Mexican food. I even love the Spanish language. But whatever. Tequila doesn't sit well in my stomach. I dunno, both or our sets of parents didn't give a shiit about Cinco...and we usually ended up at horse parties.

That being said, I hate horses.

We're wearing the ugliest sports hats we could find and drinking mint juleps around our house. I'm breaking in my reception shoes. We are having a fabulous time.

I just asked a Mexican today and she said it IS actually like the 4th of July to Mexicans and that they get really drunk. Not sure how seriusly it's taken but it's definitely considered a drinking holiday, at least.

<div>It's kind of like St. Patrick's Day: the celebration we know as "St. Patty's Day" is Americanized. In Ireland, it is a religious holiday, so they go to church first, have family meals, and parades. It's on a much more subdued scale, if I'm not mistaken. Yes, they go drink afterwards, but it's not like what goes on here.</div>

  • We generally avoid going out for big drinking holidays. Too many amateurs who can't hold their liquor.

I'd actually love a mint julep right about now but I don't feel like going to get the ingredients. We were out for a while with friends earlier today but I didn't think mint juleps and bike riding would mix well. They usually make me fall asleep.

Hola ladies. H and I decided to choose to party last night instead of tonight, so we're still recovering. We went to a May the 4th Be With You costume party at a nightclub in downtown Ft Lauderdale and it was sooooooooo much fun! I dressed as Princess Leia (in Return of the Jedi, when she was Jabba's slave) and H wore a shirt with C3PO and R2D2 doing the \ m / rock n' roll hands and "Metal Heads" printed on it.

There were three lightsaber battles with the characters suspended from the ceiling so they could fly around all jedi-like. I was runner-up in the costume contest, but that's ok because my friend Matt won. He did a really good job on his costume and make-up and is pretty much in love with my H. It was a great night, so much fun!

Tonight we start dogsitting for H's coworker, so it should be pretty chill. I'll probably make tacos for dinner since we have all the fixins and H is Mexican and all lol.

It's celebrated in certain parts ot the country, but it's not universal.  From what I understand, their actual independence day is later in the year.
