Right on, Steph! I <3 Christmas year round...but I have a problem.

OWN, what is your take on Obama's job so far? I'm just curious to see what people who aren't conservative or libertarian think of his job performance.

I think America as a country is disgustingly obese. I get so sad looking at children these days.
I think people on welfare should have to submit to mandatory random drug tests. Tim gets tested for drugs every jobsite he goes on and he busts his ass working all day. It only seems fair that in exchange for free money and healthcare they should be tested too.
    Posted by JenGin74
The only reason I disagree with this is because of children. If a parent is a drug addict and they get their food stamps, cash assistance or whatever taken away, the kids will suffer a lot more than the parent will.

While I think it is good in theory, if they test positive, then what? Take the gov't assistance away? And then the children? And then what happens to the parent? Do they get sent to a drug rehabilitation facility, that we also pay for?

Not to mention, it's VERY expensive to do drug testing. About 40 million people (clicky) are on food stamps, and at approximately $42 a pop, that's $1.6 BILLION spent on drug testing. That money could be spent better elsewhere, considering a study showed that less than 3% of people on welfare actually tested positive for hard drugs like cocaine and heroin, as opposed to just pot.

    http://www.aclu.org/drug-law-reform/drug-testing-public-assistance-recipients-condition-eligibility

There's more on drug testing welfare recipients, but, I don't agree with testing them.

*nods head* I think its sad.

Theres a show I like, "the supersizers go..." where this english couple immerses themselves in the lifestyle of a different time period. They do health tests before and after to see the effects and in some cases they were healthier and weighed less after a week of eating that way. I think there are SERIOUS flaws with what food has become for our generation and while we are slowly moving towards cleaner diets I dont think it will ever change completely and obesity is going to be a big problem for a long time.

I will weigh in here. I am VERY liberal and a big supporter but I am not pleased. I dont really know if anyone else could have done better. Part of me thinks that the economy was too far gone when he took over and that things were going to play out regardless. However- more needs to be done. What.. I am not sure. Things are only getting worse and people are suffering. (I may be biased here given me and H's own recent experiences)

Agreed with the fast food opinions (America is fat. Yup.), Seshat's opinion about parents paying for the wedding. And Ke$ha is a tool.

I'm all for buying cars that are environmentally friendly or that get good gas mileage - I just cannot stand people that are all uppity about it or it's all they every talk about. You're not winning brownie points with anyone by running around and talking about how you're the best steward of the environment in the entire world - you are just a jackass. Buy your hybrid car, and your recyclable whatevers, and just live your damn life.

It's funny, because studies have shown that when people buy cars that have better gas mileage, they just drive more, so it really doesn't help the environment like people would think. ExFI told me that, which makes sense, so I'll see if I can dig up any info on it.

I am disappointed in Obama, big time. I was raised a Democrat in a politically involved family, and I am disappointed in Obama on many levels.

I was having coffee the other day with a mega liberal, a mega conservative, and a few middle of the road types like me. I realized we all actually agreed on several points in two hours of political chat. I think we need a third party, and I think people need to stop thinking a viable third party is impossible.

Portions are out of control, and I think so many of us have lived this way that no one really knows how much one should eat. Our grandparents/parents generation ate a lot less and you can tell when you look at photos from back then. The majority of people were thin or atleast average.

I do think our diets have a lot to do with how much we all work and how busy our lives have become. Its a cycle.

Agree with this. I filed a complaint at the YMCA after seeing all the kids eating garbage for their post-game snacks. A 7 year old who plays soccer for an hour does not need to be rewarded with a cinnamon roll as big as his head. Coaches & parents - how about some fruit or other healthy snacks? How about teaching nutrition along with the sports.

My FI just graduated med school and she saw a 10 year old last week who weighed in the high 200 pound range and was about five feet tall. She got in an argument with the mom; guess why.... if you guessed it was because mom was upset that she would not write her daughter a prescription for over the counter medication for very mild acne you'd be correct. Evidently mom thought medicare would cover the meds if they were prescribed even though the daughter didn't need anything other than over the counter, she was wrong either way, but still oblivious to the fact that her daughter weighs nearly 300 pounds and is 10 years old.

MIAF's opinions are my favorites so far.

I also agree with Nebb's time travel opinion.

I think that people in general are way to judgmental about other peoples' lives, but it's especially bad here on TK. I find myself being judgy sometimes and it makes me pissed off at myself.

I also think it's silly to severely judge someone unless you can step outside of yourself and think about their rationale for making the decisions they make. IMO, blind judgements make you look like an asshole.

I'll ditto on the crazy portion sizes and everything else re: Americans are fat.

I can say that, because I am overweight. I get that I'm now an adult and it's my choices, (and I really am working on it, but that's an entirely different thread...)

But I honest feel like I am where I am today, because of my upbringing. My mom is a terrible picky eater, and I live in the midwest, so it was potatoes and meat for every meal, with bread on the side... veggie was carrots or corn (i.e. more starch.) But, I was never exposed to anything healthy at school either, so how was I supposed to learn?

I still have the worst bread/carb cravings, and I'm convinced its' because of how I ate when I was younger.

When I was in college I was a pretty hardcore liberal (I cried when John Kerry lost the election - HUGE Bush hater. I didn't really like Kerry all that much, but really, really hated Bush), but once I started working in journalism and meeting and getting to know all these politicians on the state, local and federal level - it really, really leveled me out. I find that I can hate liberals as much as I hated some conservatives, and that I enjoy some conservatives as much as I loved liberals.

I always get turned off by people who are SO completely bent on politics that it's all they can ever talk about. My grandfather, for example - every single thing that's wrong in his life is Obama's fault. Maybe he isn't living up to his "hope and change" campaign promises but my God, it's not his fault that your lunch was less than satisfying.
