Buying a dress this week.. help!

Ok so I found the dress I really want (Its Allure Bridal). I found it for $1600 at a local bridal store. The veil is $400, the cap sleaves are $200 and the alterations are $255. It is way out of my budget.
Do you think I can buy it online and have it altered at a local bridal shop? Is that too risky?

Re: Buying a dress this week.. help!

  • Heck yea, buy it online and have another seamstress do the alterations.  Unless it's a custom dress (and if you can buy it online I'm assuming you won't), then the person doing the alterations isn't any more familiar with it than your scenerio.

Disclaimer: I've never done that with such an expensive item before, but why wouldn't it work???

    Good luck either way!! :)
  • NO! Don't purchase it off of ebay (unless it's used) or any of those "custom" sites

RK Bridal, Pearl's Place... I know there's another, but I can't remember. These are reputable, brick and mortar stores that ALSO sell online and can sell dresses for much cheaper because of the volumes. This way you'll actually get the dress you're expecting!

What veil are you looking at that costs $400?? I understand some women spending that much if they can afford it, but I can not. I've been veil shopping on www.etsy.com and www.affordableweddingveils.com

Also, you should check your local board for recs on a good seamstress in your area.  Alterations are always cheaper when you don't go with the salon you purchase the dress from.

  • If it's way out of your budget, don't buy it.  I think Netbride is the other place the PP was thinking of, I bought a BM dress through them, hassle free.

But seriously, $400 for a veil, and $200 for cap sleeves?  Is there any possibility you can find a similar one of each online?  That sounds like way too much.  And see if you can find a seamstress on your local board that's recommended for wedding dress work.  Chances are, it will be much, much cheaper than doing it through the store.
  • If your ok with a used dress I suggest preownedweddingdress.com I bought my Reem Acra on there for a VERY reasonable price and I know of some brides getting a veil, tiara, ect from the seller for a decent price(like 50 or less) or even free. A lot of the dresses were drycleaned and some not even worn.

Do NOT pay $400 for a veil!  That's ridiculous!  It's only made out of cheap tulle (the same tulle material you can buy at the craft store).  Occansey Designs is a reliable online custom veil company that has been recommended on the Knot for years.  I would suggest you take a look at their website because their prices are very low!  Or you can do what I did and ask your seamstress make your veil for you (my seamstress made my cathedral length veil for $40).  Also, capsleeves are cheap to make too.
