S/O Last Names

How much of a PITA is it to have 4 names?

I'm considering tacking FI's last name onto my current name, but I'm concerned that I'll be annoyed with 4 names when filling out forms and whatnot and I don't want to hyphenate.

Well, I don't know about other people, but I never sign my middle name onto forms, so to me it's really only 3names I would have to sign onto documents. And, really, how often do you have to sign documents? AND, if you do sign documents often, is the extra time (we're talking seconds here, minutes if there is a scantron involved) worth it to you to have yours and his name?

I was thinking more about filling out the First Middle Last blanks on other forms, rather than just signing. I'm sure I'm overthinking this, but it's been on my mind and thought I'd throw it out there.

I only ever put my initials into the middle name boxes. I have gone by Firstname C E lastname for pretty much ever.

My BF has two middle names-his "real" one and then his mom's maiden name. I don't think that he has ever had a problem with that and he's had 4 his whole life.

Ask LVB. She had 2 middle names before, so she's always had 4 names.

I have 4 names now, and all together, my name is 28 letters long. It really isn't that big of a deal. I always put both of me middle names on forms, because I like my second middle name better, so I hate leaving it off.

I haven't had any problems with it. If they ask for a middle name, I just use my maiden name. For example, I couldn't have 4 names on my driver's license, so it says First Maiden Married.

My mom always had two middle names (complicated by the fact that she goes by one of these middle names) and she's always just left one off, so she's J. (first initial) Jane Penny.

I was born into Jennifer Ashley Elizabeth Lastname, and I really can't wait to get married and drop my two middle names, move my maiden to middle and take FI's last.

I would never, EVER write it out when signing. It's just that pesky middle inital box on most forms.

I moved my maiden name to my middle name and dropped my middle name. This way I can use all three names professionally and socially, but when it comes to "official" stuff, I only have to use first and married. A lot of places get confused if you have two last names, because some will file under the maiden, others under the married, or they don't have room for two names, etc. This way works well for me--I don't have to use my maiden name if it's easier not to.

Just out of curiousity.... for those of you with 2 middle names. I actually have never known someone with 2 middle names. Why have 2?

I thought about it. But, each of our last names has 7 digits. No thank you. Plus my middle name has 6 letters. Way too many. So, I just took H's. If my last name was Lee and his was Smith or something then I probably would have.

For me it would be because all of my names are family names and most of my family addresses me by my first and middle names together.

And currently, with 3 names, my name is 11 digits long. FI's last name will add another 9.

This is the same as my FI. But he doesn't use his second middle, so he just goes by first, first middle initial, last. Except for things like his college diploma and our wedding invitations, which have all 4 names.

(That's probably what we'll do for any sons we have too - they'll get my last name as a second middle.)

I don't really know, I've never asked. I think my parents liked the name Ashley, and Elizabeth was my paternal grandmothers name. I assumed they just couldn't choose between both.

What about on things like social security cards, passports, that kind of thing? I know my passport says First Middle under "Given Name" (I just checked). Will they accept 3 names there? Or do you just book your plane tickets without middle names?

I definitely want my Married name to be my only last name, then middle/maiden as my two middle names I think.

My brother has 4 names, and it doesn't bother him.

I'm going to hyphenate, even though it'll be more of a PITA because I'm a notary and I have to constantly sign my full name to stuff. The way I see it, I've had my name my whole life and I don't see why I should have to give up my name just because I get married. I have no problem adding to my name, but a big problem with removing the last name I'll have had for 35 years.
