Registry Faux Paux?

So I was on my month board and there is a registry thread going on that has people suggestion to register at places like Home Depot, Lowes and Sears for tools and outdoor furniture. There was also mention of TV's and games.

Thoughts?

I dont know why but when I saw that I felt weird about it. I wonder if it is because I have never heard of that before?

I think the home improvement stores don't have registries anymore. Sears does, but I don't know about registering for a TV and games and stuff. I used wedding cash to buy those things.

I mean I know that on registries - a lot of the point is to register for things that you wouldn't ordinarily get yourself.

But patio furniture? I've never heard of that. I can't imagine that.

A friend of mine registered for a treadmill a few years ago - along with a few other questionable items.

Where do you draw the line between "hey it's a registry" and "I just want this?"

That sounds like an expensive registry. Tools and furniture don't run cheap.

I wouldn't care where the registry was for unless every item was ridiculously expensive.

Tools and outdoor furniture seems fine. Its stuff for your home, it doesn't have to be inside your home.

We have board games on ours, because we like board games and playing them with our friends. They last forever and help us entertain people, just like a serving platter.

Video games, I'd side-eye, though.

We have a registry at Sears because FI wanted to put some tools on it. I don't see how his registering for tools is any different than registering for kitchen crap. I mean, it's stuff we need to get basic household repairs done and stuff we'll use. We didn't register for any like patio furniture or anything, but we did register for a grill cover and a storage bin for outside. I guess I don't see a problem with outdoor stuff or tools.

As a guest, I wouldn't mind buying patio furniture, as that is something they could use to entertain me when I come over. I guess video games and a new tv could entertain me too. Damn, I'm torn.

Also, when I said "tools" I didn't mean "$500 jigsaw." (I have no idea how much jigsaws actually cost, but I think they're expensive) I meant screwdrivers and shiit. I don't think he registered for any tool that was over $50.

Ditto LC, I've seen people register for tools, etc and I think that's reasonable. I would not buy the B&G a video game or baby stuff, however.

I have never really had a problem with registering for tools. They're an important part of preparing a new home, just like dishes and linens would be. We intended to register for tools, but DH never got his butt in gear and did it.

I kind of feel like recreational equipment is a little grabby, in that it doesn't really help you set up a home. But by the same token, I might consider buying outdoor equipment for a couple who loves to camp or hike together, and it might be nice to know what they actually want instead of just buying them something useless, KWIM? But then, I could always just get them a gift card or cash too.

Bottom line, I don't really judge unless a couple either asks for cash or puts a bunch of insanely expensive stuff on there without affordable options.

Yeah, i dont know.

I mean realistically I dont care what people register for, if I dont agree with it Ill just get something I do or a gift card. But some of the suggestions made me "Hmmm".

I asked my mom about registering for furniture (we have nothing but a bed!) and she said that it was our job to buy those things. I couldn't imagine registering for lawn furniture but hey to each her own.

I guess its just hard to say where you should draw the line.

Personally I wouldnt do it, but there are very few things I judge people on and I dont think this would be one of them.

They live in a tiny apartment, and I wondered where she was going to put all that stuff! I don't see how registering for lawn furniture at a home improvement store is any different than registering for kitcheware at a home furnishing store. It's something you want/need that you hope other people are going to buy for you. If one were to argue certian things are grabby or should be bought by the couple themselves, couldn't one argue the entire registry would also fall under those same rules?

Scott bought a tiny ceramic rooster a few years ago and wanted to put it on the back of the guest bathroom toilet with a note that said "from one little cocck to another" or something equally obnoxious. I don't see a problem with it as long as they are items the couple will use and the registry isn't entirely expensive items, as PPs have said.

I do also think there's a difference between having a couple video games on there if the groom is a gamer and his guy friends might want to give a game instead of a kitchen item and having a couple dozen games on the registry. At one wedding we went to, DH and I gave the couple board games from their registry as did a couple of DH's friends. We were given specific instructions to use part of one my friend's monetary wedding gift to us to buy a specific PS3 game. He wanted to play it remotely with DH.

I'm okay with it as long as there are other, normal registry items and things at various price points (not just a $2,000 couch and a kitchenaid mixer).

I have a friend who registered for some traditional stuff and then some board games and a keyboard piano. Which fit her and her fiance's personalities and interests PERFECTLY. If someone asked me what they were interested in I would say, "board games and music" hands down.

We had a friend who gave her then FI a "gun" at Target so he could put things on the registry. When they got home and she looked online he had registered for a basketball, frisbees, a tent, sleeping bags (they do like to camp), a portable grill, a deck of cards, and some other small outdoor things. His guy friends bought this stuff for them. The guys liked buying guy things and it made the groom happy.

I think I would just side-eye the patio furniture because it's so expensive. I know it's probably for the discount but I would be wondering if the couple really expected their guests to buy them a $700 table.

I thought it was annoying/interesting that my friend had so many of the same things on her registry. Basically she went through Target and registered for every kitchen utensil in every brand. Same with towels (every color, multiple brands).

This thread has made me curious; FI moved in with me and we've already got just about anything we need household related. I had planned on putting some recreational type items on the registry, for example video games which some people have already pointed out in this thread as something they'd find out of place and inappropriate, so if we can't register for entertainment things, we don't need anything for the house, we won't ask for money and we don't want to not register since some relatives have already started asking where we're registered, what exactly do we do?

Also some just register to get the discount at the end. That's the only reason I would justify adding expensive items that are not normally acceptable on a registry.

Yeah, thats what I was thinking, nothing crazy, I wouldn't mind having some bluray movies that I haven't had a chance to buy, I could see buying some inexpensive tools, etc. simply because it would be things we'd use, they wouldn't be too expensive and there's not much else we need other than items for fun since I already had all the house stuff and we've bought what we (i.e. she lol) needed after moving in.
