Wedding Invitations & Paper

Who Gets Save-the-Dates?

Ok, this might be a silly question, but who gets Save-the-Dates?  I thought it was anyone you are inviting to the wedding...to basically say "hey, we're gonna invite you to our wedding so please keep that date open."

My fiance, based on some input from a (married) woman he works for thinks they should only go to out-of-town guests and people we don't see as often. He says people we work with, the bridal party and people we see all the time, wouldn't get one.

Is that right and I've been confused about save-the-dates all this time?

Re: Who Gets Save-the-Dates?

  • I am sending them to everyone. OOT guests, local guests and family.

  • It's up to you.  They're mainly for the people who would need extra time to make arrangements to attend, but it's certainly not improper to send them to everyone.  They're still a fairly new invention, so the only real set-in-stone rule that I'm aware of concerning STDs is that anyone who receives one must receive an invitation as well.

Sometimes I feel like people think that brides are delicate little flower princesses who get all dressed up and pretty for one special moment of their dreams, when really they're just normal people who just happen to be getting married. Things shouldn't have to be sugar-coated for grown-ass women. -mstar284
  • I have posted this before, but here goes.  I think they are a complete waste of money - stationery and postage.  I sent out my invitations two months before the wedding (No Save the Date) and no one refused because of lack of notice of wedding date.  Most of us are just not so popular that our social calendars are booked six months in advance thus necessitating Save the Date cards.
  • Un like the post by Alex...they're not entirely all that expensive.  You can create postcards on Vistaprint and get them for free...essentially you just have to pay for postage.

Like pp's said, it's up to do if you want to send them to your enitre guest list or just OOT guests.

We sent ours to all of our guests, simply bc we were excited to get the word/wedding date out!
  • We emailed our STDs.  No cost whatsoever.  They can be very useful to people who need to make travel arrangements or who need lots of lead time to get the time off work.

  • I like receiving a save the date because it lets me know way in advance that I'm invited.  I never want to assume I'm invited to someone's wedding and it takes that awkwardness away during the couple's engagement if I know a long time before if I'm invited or not.
