Work From Home Vendors

Okay so I'm coming across a lot of vendors who work from their home...I don't see anything wrong with this however I wonder if any of you have any "rules" about certain vendors you would NOT use if they work from home. I am definitely thinking I don't want a work from home cake baker...and I am kinda worried about florists though I have come across someone who I think I like. I'll be meeting her next week. What do you all think? Don't get me wrong...I'm not knocking a hardworking business owner..I'm one myself! But I am curious. I am def. thinking no with the cake baker just b/c of sanitation issues...and sure a business can be dirty...but a home isn't regulated at all. Anyway...just wondering. Thanks guys!

    If a home is also the person's place of business, why wouldn't it be regulated?

    I would think if someone is doing catering as a side job out of their home they aren't being inspected as far as sanitation grades...perhaps I assumed wrong. I just thought that was the case.

    We interviewed a home baker and she said her kitchen was inspected by the health department and goes by the same standards as a regular kitchen.

    I think I was thinking of someone who works from home as more of a side job. I was generally just wondering if anyone was leary of a particular type of home vendor. It could just be me. I'm leary of all vendors at this point...I want a perfect wedding. lol j/k

    Our baker made our cake at her home. She too had it inspected. I don't really see a problem with them and I found that home vendors are actually a little more relaxed than others IMO.

    No, I will say, for a home vendor (with the exception of like a photographer maybe and maybe a DJ) I would want to visit their home and see what their buisness is like. For instance, if it was a florist, I would want to see where they work and samples of their work. Not just meet in a public place and do buisness there.

    Sometimes you just gotta have a little trust, but you still have to use common sense with it :)

    I wouldn't let the operations out of the home bother you.  We have friends that run their catering company partially out of their home.  They also have a full scale restaurant kitchen complete with walk-ins built on to their house that is inspected by the county health inspector frequently. 

    I think that if it's a food product, I'd ask to see thier health inspection, otherwise, if they have good reviews, I wouldn't be bothered.

    Yeah just ask for their health inspection record.  If they can't produce one then move on :)

    no the inspection process for home bakers is different than the full blown ones that storefront have.  funny story...i bought some doughnuts from a home baker and when i went in i saw roaches in the cases.  i called the health department and asked about the inspection.  i was told that all businesses get inspected but the department of agriculture leads the ones for home bakers and other one is done by the county for restraurants.  the one the dept of ag does is not very intensive and not very often. 

    i have releatives that bake cakes and i can tell you for a fact i would never buy a cake from anyone working out of the home.  but thats me. 

    brick and morter always help in credibility

    Thanks guys. Yeah I won't likely go with a home baker as a personal choice...thanks Andrea for that information. I am not knocking at home businesses...as I said I have my own as well. I was just curious if anyone else was a bit leary also. Well thanks again!

    Personally for me.  Out of home vendors that I would accept are photographers (just because they don't pay for a space doesn't mean their office isn't great at home), videographers, make-up stylist (mary kay ladies are the best).  People I wouldn't recommend from home would be the Cake baker, caterer, florist and hair stylist.  Unless they live in a mansion with a huge kitchen or happen to have a flower pasture as their back yard I'll stick with the pros.
