Q: Do you lock your car at night?

I never do, because there's nothing in there worth stealing.   I also figure if someone wanted to root around and look, it's better to leave the door open to avoid having a window smashed in.

Well, this morning we woke up to find my passenger door wide open and the glove compartment emptied onto the floor, the little compartment betweeen teh doors opened and emptied onto the floor, etc.  Someone rifled through and just left the door open.  I think my battery will be dead now, but I haven't checked yet.  No biggie - just get a jumpstart and we're good to go.

H is all upset because he ALWAYS locks his car door and doesn't understand why anyone wouldn't.  He argues that someone could mess with your unlocked car very easily (just like last night) and that the argument against getting a smashed window doesn't hold water because most thieves are opportunistic and will go through an unlocked door but won't bother/risk smashing a window.

I feel pretty much indifferent on the subject, but since he feels so strongly about it, I'll lock the door from now on (or try to - I'm just not in the habit).

What do y'all think?

  • I lock it even when its in my garage but I am pretty insane. I am the person who will get out of bed to ensure the door she locked is really locked....

  • I do when i remember. My clicky thing has no more batter so I essentially have no more power locks. If someone wanted to rifle through my mess, they are welcome. I doubt they'd find anything of value.

My cousin used to have a convertible and always left it unlocked because it cost more to replace a cut top than to replace a broken window. She never left anything of value in there anyway.

  • Nothing taken.  Maybe some pennies.  Really, there's nothing in there to take - I have some crappy home-copied CDs, some gum wrappers, and a Captain Underpants book in there.
  • I  live in the middle of nowhere, so I don't lock it at home. Every other place I do though. I've also learned never to park on a street in downtown Toronto at night, because it will be broken into.
  • I definitely lock my doors, and always have.  I live in a tiny town where there's rarely any crime but just a few weeks ago we had a string of break-ins.  Kids were checking doors on cars to find the ones unlocked and then stealing anything they could get their hands on.

However I have a secondary motive.  My neighbors have 3 little hellions that like to play in cars and I've seen them try to release the parking brake on their mom's car.  The last thing I need is for one of them to just open my door, get in my car, release the parking brake, and either get hurt or damage my or someone else's property.

And betrothed, I'm disgusted with most of the comments that you have posted. I don't think I've ever read such judgmental comments in my life. I'm so lucky that the girls I speak to on theknot are nothing like you...I would've never come on here for ADVICE if I would've encountered a big a bitch as you. I genuinely feel awful for your children or your future children, and I think it would be irresponsible of YOU not to invest in their future therapy sessions starting now. Because trust me when I tell you honey, they're gonna need it. ~jcaruncho2010

  • We do.  I always have, DH used to live in the country where people leave the keys in the car routinely.  Now that we're in the suburbs, we lock the cars.  We've been broken into a few times, but only when it's unlocked.

DH used to have a Chevy Tracker with a soft top, and a back window that unzips.  Hooligans broke into that one, twice, by cutting their way it.  Really, take whatever you can find that's valuable ($1 probably), but for pete's sake, just unzip the window and crawl in.  Cost $200 a time to replace that piece of plastic.  Stupid criminals.
  • Oh OWN that sucks and would really creep me out.

I lock my door always. A little obsessively too. I'm that person hitting the lock button 7 times as I walk away just to make sure. So all you hear is beep...beep....beep.
  • I didn't when I lived at home with my parents because we lived in the boonies.  I do now because FI and I live close to people - still out of the city limits but in a real subdivision.

Plus one night last summer we came home to our back gate wide open and the light bulbs removed from our motion lights.  We live in a really good neighborhood but there are some questionable characters a few roads over so we lock our doors

And I did go out to leave for work a couple weeks ago and someone has loosened all the lug nuts on my tires.  wtf is wrong with people.

  • I don't, mostly b/c my car doesn't have power locks and it's a pain to lock them now that it's a 10 year old car.. especially in the winter. And I have nothing in the car except for the required papers
  • Yes, if it's parked outside. Most the time I'm parked in the garage. I'm always on DH for leaving so much stuff in his truck (he doesn't park in the garage during the summer, the bikes take #1) but he always locks it.

I only say make sure you keep it locked, because I have heard if your car is stolen you may have issues with the insurance company, because you didn't take precautions to prevent it, does that make sense?

I have had my car broken into, they broke out the window and stole all my cd's and my stereo. From then on I've always kept it locked. I felt terribly violated. That may be what your DH's feeling.

Criminals are stupid.  Nothing in my car, doors unlocked and they still slit my roof to get in. Had to pay a $200 deductible so that some jackhole could steal 50 cents worth of pennies, empty lighters, and a bottle of transmission fluid.
  • I do and I always have. I live in the city and folks will steal!

I have had my window busted and had things taken from my car. I felt so violated and I had to get an alarm on my little Toyota Corrolla. Now I have had 2 trucks since then and have always had an alarm.

So sorry this happened to you OWN! Sucks big time I know. Listen to Hubby and lock the doors from now on.
And the whole time, my future husband was in the room...... image image
  • I do by habit. I automatically hit the lock button when I'm getting out of the truck, it's second nature. I don't trust people, even though we live far back from the road. I don't have anything worthwhile to steal in there except maybe the jumper cables. Other than that a few jackets, some Disney soundtracks, and a crapton of pens that no longer work. Steal away, theives.
  • We always lock our vehicles. We also live in the middle of nowhere (our "town" has 3 caution lights) and know our neighbors by name, but there are some little punks around that like to steal things.

Our neighbors mom had her vehicle stolen about a week ago. She had just bought a new car and they stole her old one. Another guy down the road had tools stolen out of his shed (in his backyard) in the middle of the day. There is also a particular person who is back in the area who is known for breaking into homes for any RX he can get his hands on. Sad thing is, he has no legs.

Yeah, I am this way too.

But I've been robbed before so I'm a little sensitive about locking my shiit up.  When we were in high school, Ben took me on his family vacation to the Twin Cities and we went to the Mall of America for a couple hours before heading to a Twins game.  When we returned to the car, someone had broken into the car and stole all our luggage.

And I've shown this picture before, but I'll do it again.  Last summer, my dad dropped my car off at a body shop in town (it had to get fixed because of something he broke on it) and left it unlocked.  A kid stole my car and crashed it.

So yeah, I lock my car.  I lock everything.

Statistically as far as cars go - most car thieves are opportunistic and just go around trying to open doors until they find one that's unlocked.  My ex-boyfriend's roommate did have a guy break open a window on his car to steal his stereo - but that happens a lot less often than people getting into cars that are just open.

  • I always, always, always lock my car. My street has tons of foot traffic and we don't have a garage. So leaving my car unlocked in my driveway would make me really uncomfortable. The one night FI didn't lock his car, someone opened the door and stole his iPod.

  • DH just found out a friend of his who has his same type of truck, just had their tailgate stolen while they were in Home Depot, right in the parking lot.

So he even keeps that locked now.

  • KD- Yes, I've heard that too. I think an insurance company will completely deny the claim if the keys were left in the vehicle.

Yeah I know that's what my dad said ha ha.  I think someone was trying to steal the tires but gave up because they are hard as sh!t to get off and they aren't a normal size tire.  It was really scary.

joke would have been on them though because the tires are about a month away from needing to be replaced...

  • Oooh I just thought of another instance where locking my car saved me from being robbed.  The Massage Therapy school I went to was located in a really rough part of the city.  One day during lunch some girl came in screaming that her car had been broken into and all of her CDs  and random other stuff was stolen.  1/2 my classmates went down to find their cars also broken into and stuff stolen.  No one broke into my car, which surprised me because it was brand new and I had a bag out on the seat (it was filled with dirty laundry but a thief wouldn't have known that).  Come to find out everyone who's car was broken into had left them unlocked.

  • I lock my doors.  H is just starting to lock his. We're not living in a great area right now.
However when I was in high school I was parked downtown and someone threw a cinderblock through my window. They stole all of my cds and both mine and my friend's purses that were under the seats.  Luckily we had our ID's and debit cards with us so they didn't really get away with much.
Someone found my friend's purse and contents strewn around a road about a mile away the next day.  My stuff was never found.

  • Didn't .... until literally last week!  I don't keep anything worth stealing in my car either, and I walk to the train station weekdays, so I only use it on weekends.  Well Friday night I found my trunk halfway open, battery not quite dead.  I hadn't driven in four days (so battery def. would have been dead if I had left it open...) meaning someone totally got in my car.  I lock it now.
  • FI always locks the car. We have underground parking where you have to get through two gates and security guards to get in and he still locks it. We lock it every where we go. We live in the city and you just never know what might happen.
  • I can't imagine not locking any door.  We live in such a populated area that unlocked="please come steal my car."

This happen to a friend of mine too. I guess the tailgate is worth like $600 by it myself.
  • One night, years ago, I was sitting in my kitchen of my old house on the computer. I had all the lights off but the glow of the computer screen and the kitchen window was open. I'm in a chat room on the computer just typing away when I hear rustling out front. Some guy walks through my yard up to my car, which was maybe 30 feet away from where I was sitting, and cupped his hand over the passenger window to look into my truck. I just yelled "WTF do you think you're doing"? And ran to turn the front porch light on, and I left it on from that point on.

  • Yes, I always, ALWAYS lock up.  I've heard too many stories of homeless people getting into unlocked cars and sleeping or doing other stuff.  Stuff I'd rather not think about, really.  lol  I don't have anything to steal, but I don't want anyone in my car.

  • I lock it everywhere, all the time.

I didn't before, but a couple of years ago someone stole my prescription drugs (just BC and anti-migraine pills... you can't get high on that) and my softball cleats out of my car... while it was parked in the locked ramp at my office.  Neither one was worth a ton of money, but it was a hassle to go back to the pharmacy and buy new cleats before my next game.
