Trying not to freak out...

So I ordered my dress back in August. The one I tried one was a 12, and they clipped me into it. She goes "oh, you'll definitely be able to fit into an 8".. so we go up to the register to order and I told her I would feel a lot better if she ordered a 10. She proceeded to tell me that she's being doing this for 20 years and blah blah blah and I'll be fine in an 8. Well I joined a gym and went last night for my complimentary personal training session and he did all my measurements. I got home and decided to look online at my dress and compare measurements....and the 8 they ordered for me, it definitely to small in the hips. My hips are 4 inches too big for the 8. I should definitely be in a 10, probably a 12. I know I still have 6 months left til the wedding but now I'm going to have to bust my a$$ to make sure I fit into it. I should be here in December sometime and I am extremly nervous.

  • What dress is it?  Depending on how many layers there are, you might have more room than you think to let it out.

That being said, she should have showed you the size chart and where your measurements fell, and then ideally let you pick the final size.  I'd definitely call the store manager and discuss with her.

No she just clipped me in and asked how it felt. Then said that I am a size 8...which in pants is what I sometimes wear, but I know dresses are way different.

<div>It'll depend on the seam allowances.  From what I remember way back when, we could usually get about 1.5" - 2" out of that, but it really would depend.  We were also always supposed to order up on that style since it's so fitted.  You'd think if she had 20 years in the industry, she'd know that dresses stretch when they're tried on all the time.  </div>

Yea that's what I thought too, but I figured, who am I to say anything, she's been doing it for this long, she obviously knows what she is talking about. I should have gone with my gut. But now I guess it'll be Zumba 4 times a week until it comes in and we shall see. The worst part is I will have to try it on for the first time after the holidays.

Completely agree with the bolded part.  It was their presumption, their mistake and THEY need to fix it.  And the sooner the fixing process is started, the easier it's likely to be all around.

I find that consultant's actions odd and possibly even suspicious.  Usually they recommend ordering <em>up</em> rather than down because 1.) bridal sizes tend to run smaller than ready-to-wear and 2.) it's usually easier to take a dress in than to let it out.

Sorry you're having to deal with this!
In Response to Re: Trying not to freak out... : Yep, they should be willing to exchange it if it hasn't been taken out of the store, especially if the consultant didn't measure you first.  At least, i know David's Bridal will.  That's actually part of the appeal to using their in-house alterations service, that if something goes wrong with the dress that isn't fixable, they replace it at no cost to you. I would call the manager of the store ASAP, explain the problem and ask about canceling that order and ordering a 10 instead.
    Posted by StageManager14
Every salon I went to (other than David's Bridal) was VERY strict about the no return policy.  They make you sign a release when you order the dress.  If you agreed to order a wrong size, it is your fault.

Call the store immediately.  Explain the situation to the manager.  Depending on how long it is has been since you ordered the dress, you may be out of luck, But it is worth a shot.

Also, you can't tell by the picture how much fabric is in the seams.  You'll only be able to tell that when you actually look at the dress.  Most dresses can be let out up to one size, but there is no guarantee of that.

A size 8 wedding dress is probably anywhere from a 4-6 street size.  That person is a complete and total moron to order your street size without measuring you.
In Response to Re: Trying not to freak out... : I disagree.  OP could have taken steps to prevent this such as insisting they order the proper size.  She does have to take some blame for allowing them to order a size she knew wouldn't fit.  If they insisted she could have ordered her dress elsewhere, especially if they didn't measure her.

<div>If you don't know anything about bridal sizing/ordering process, it's hard to not just take it at face value.  I worked in a salon for a while, but if I had walked in somewhere to buy a dress before I worked there, they probably could have done the same thing to me without me realizing that that wasn't how it was supposed to go.</div>

I am going through the same thing right now, so I feel your pain.  When I ordered my dress she said I can order you either a 10 or a 12.  I said "go for the 10 so it will motivate me to lose weight."
So yeah, fast forward 6 months and 3 inches lost in my hips and the damn dress is still too small in the hip.  Fortunately, I still have 4 months before my first alteration appointment.  I guess I better get my assss in gear.

  • This is the dress I ordered as well. I am a street size 2 and the bridal store I went to said I could fit into a 4 but she ordered a 6 to be safe. I would definately call the store you get the dress from and see what they can do about this. I know for me, the dress is going to take 5 months just to come in the RIGHT size, you dont want to have to wait even longer from them to re-order!

Go back to the salon, and see how much space you have left in the sample.  Also, try on different dresses in that designer in that cut, if they have one, that are closer to your size.

It MAY fit, but honestly, there isn't much you can do about it now.

I think it may depend on the particular dress.  I was a 14 in the waist, a 16 in the hips, and a 20 in the bust of my Mori Lee dress.  I am VERY glad I ordered the 20, or my boobs would have never fit into that dress.  I had to do a lot of alterations to the waist and some in the hips, understandably, but I would have been falling out of a smaller size in the bust.
  • When I ordered it they did my measurements and then ordered the size that cooresponded with my biggest measurement.  Of course I hope to lose weight, but that may not happen so I didn't want to take a chance.

Had I wanted to go with any size other than what they suggested, I had to sign off saying I'm not taking their suggestion and that I'm on my own if it's not right.  If they suggested a size and I agreed to it and it's wrong, then they are responsible.  This was the same with all my bridesmaids.

Hopefully she does know what she's doing and if she doesn't, I hope that you have some paperwork to back you up saying you agreed to her suggestion.  Otherwise you will most likely be responsible.  I'd go back to see if they have a dress in the same designer in your size or close to it like a PP said.  That's what we did with one of my bridesmaids and thank goodness we did, because they size they thought would fit was still snug so she had to go up one.

Good luck and I hope it's all a lot of worry for nothing!
In Response to Re: Trying not to freak out... : Go back to the salon, and see how much space you have left in the sample.  Also, try on different dresses in that designer in that cut, if they have one, that are closer to your size.  It MAY fit, but honestly, there isn't much you can do about it now.

  • I can't believe they didn't measure you, that just sounds crazy to me. I measured a 6 waist 8 bust 10 hips and ordered the 10. I lost 15 lbs since then so when I got my dress a few weeks ago it was too big. It should be easy to fix with alterations though. Good luck this weekend with them!
What dress is it?  Depending on how many layers there are, you might have more room than you think to let it out. That being said, she should have showed you the size chart and where your measurements fell, and then ideally let you pick the final size.  I'd definitely call the store manager and discuss with her.

yeah thats what they did for me

  • After they measured me, I fell between two sizes due to my hips.  (I lovingly call my self a big bottom pear. (-: )  Not only did the woman working with me consult another employee for a second opinion, but she also asked me what street size I wear and whether or not I am prone to weight fluctuations.  That helped determine which of the two sizes to get.

When you talked with them, did you ask about how much wiggle room there is?  I agree with PP's that you can't do much now, but asking how much they can take out or in may help ease your mind.  Hope it goes well this weekend for you!
