Question about Alterations

I got a quote for alterations on my dream dress from Robbins Alterations in Wauwatosa. The dress is a sample so it needs quite a bit of work done (taking it from size 10 to size 6, pressing, replacing the zipper, etc) and was given a quote of $630. Seems awfully high for alterations, considering it doesn't need to be hemmed

What kind of quotes did you guys get for alterations, or how much did you pay? The dress is a sample so I'm getting it for a great bargain, but the alterations are more than I expected. Mary from Robbins came highly recommended, and I don't know if I could get it cheaper by going elsewhere.

I have not yet purchased the dress because I wanted an alterations quote first.

If you are taking it in from a 10 to a 6, then it seems fairly reasonable.

Dresses can usually only be altered + / - 2 sizes in either direction - the more drastic the size alteration the more work is involved.  So in your case, it's going to take a lot of work to get the dress to the correct size and shape without losing the intergrity of the design.

Also, depending on beading, lace appliques, pleating, layers, material types, etc. that can all tak a lot of re-work which = lots of hours.  So the more detailed your dress, the more labor involved.

If you are having a bustle put in, it can be anywhere from $8-15 per bustle point.  bustles can be anywhere from 2 - 7 points.

You can get quotes from other alterations places to compare, but just make sure you are checking with reputable people experienced in wedding dresses.

I didn't need much for my dress: hemmed and a 2 point bustle.  I think I paid $130 ish.

I have no idea since your taking it down four sizes but I will tell you what my alterationist did and maybe it will help.

    1. Take zipper out
    2. Add loops to back side for corset
    3. Make the material to lace the corset
    4. Let the bust out
    5. Hem the bottom of the dress (lace with layers and train)
    6. Steam dres
    7. Bead check
    8. Provide a dress bag

All for $250 and six weeks. I thought her quote was alot but holy geeze yours seems high. My lady is out of Woodstock IL (on IL/WI border - worth the drive) her salon is called " Stitch 'N Time Bridal Boutique"  815-337-4444. She will give appx totals over the phone but it really all depends when you get there and she gets into the dress. She is a one women show at that store so give plenty of time. Appointments are usually 2-3 weeks apart in between her needing you to come in. Accepts cc's and requires 1/2 down to start.

I highly reccommend Karen Sheard from Burlington. She does alterations out of a flower shop but does fantastic work for very reasonable. When my brother got married she took my moms MOG dress down 2 sizes (weight watchers really works!) as well as up about 3 inches. I think all together she paid around $50 to $60.

The flower shop web site is www.giabellaflowers.com
