Bride wants us to wear cowboy boots

With this dress:

I've never worn or owned cowboy boots before. The wedding is outdoors on a swelteringly hot, July day in Georgia. I know I'm going to look stumpy and feel uncomfortable with cowboy boots and that dress (the dress is not flattering to my body type anyway), but I'll suck it up for the bride. I just don't know anything about pairing cowboy boots with a bridesmaid's dress.

I'm assuming cowboy boots are also pretty expensive, no? I don't know where to start with shopping for what she wants. Any advice?

Thank you so much!

  • That's an odd request. I'd probably tell my friend to shove it unless she wants to pay for my shitkickers.

  • I almost feel like if she wants you to wear them, then she should buy them.  Don't ask me how that is different from the dress, but it is.  At least if they're expensive.

Yeah, I think the only way that could work is if you guys have long, wavy hair and maybe a cowboy hat.

And be sure to wear some sort of sock or else you feet with STINK!
  • What would you say? The other BMs (from what I have heard so far) seem to be onboard.

    VERY expensive.

  • She wants you to buy the boots? No no no, that's too damn much money for something I would never wear again.

  • When I opened the thread I was drinking a coke and it almost came out my nose. Who would put the dress with boots? I mea,n I am by no means a fashionista but that seems like a no no to me. And yes boots are really expensive, even the cheap ones. Maybe you could borrow a pair from a friend? Or does she want matching boots?

She hasn't offered, but I feel like she should. I think if she knew that that was the polite thing to do, she probably would, but I don't think she's got a clue. I feel like an accessory. A miserable one.

  • I wouldn't be excited about it, but it's a common thing to see in my region...I've only owned one pair of cowboy boots and I got them from my church's benevolence closet (with permission of course) because I needed them for some event.

You could honestly check out resale shops. It may not be your first choice, but it beats forking out a lot of money for something you don't want.

  • Maybe comment to her that you think that it could be pretty expensive, and you're not sure if you can afford it.  Are you already buying your own dress, traveling, hotels, parties, etc?  That stuff adds up so quickly, and then to add on something that seems so frivolous.
  • Shannon, if she's close enough, maybe just have a bit of a chat with her.  I think you should just tell her about your concerns and let her know that you can't afford those boots. Or, that you don't want to buy them.

Yes, I live in Florida and the wedding is in Atlanta. So I'm paying for all of that.

Well, now I feel better. I wanted to make sure I wasn't just being a whiney brat by having negative feelings about the whole thing. But clearly, this is sorta ridiculous. I think I will just have a bit of a chat with her.

Will it be bad for her photos though? If I'm the only one who doesn't (look ridiculous) have cowboy boots on?

For a while, I really wanted to wear cowboy boots with my wedding dress.  I saved a ton of inspiration pictures.

That said, I certainly wouldn't have inflicted them on my bridesmaids.  Cowboy boots can be expensive and take time to break in.  And of course, if they're not your style to begin with, you're not likely to wear them again.

My MOH found a really cute and inexpensive pair of cowboy boots online on a steampunk site.  I'm digging through old e-mail to find the link.

ETA:  I'm multitasking at work so there weren't any responses when I started typing this.  Reading through them now, it looks like you don't want to wear the boots -- and I don't blame you!  You'd be well within the bounds of courtesy (and sanity!) to refuse.  If they weren't my style, I wouldn't take on the expense either.

  • as long as you don't have to buy real leather steel toed boots, i dont think its that big of a deal. here's a pair from target for less than $30.

    http://www.target.com/dp/B002VAEGHA/ref=sc_qi_img_viewdetails?ie=UTF8&title=view%20full%20details

If she asked you to buy $30 strappy heals you wouldn't have a problem with that. i think you should just suck it up, its just one day.

Yeah, I am decidedly NOT a cowboy boot person.  If someone wanted me to spend over $100 on a pair of footwear I'd never wear before or after (and I know from friends that Celles is right, cowboy boots can need a LOT of breaking in or you'll be in tears on the dance floor from the blisters), I'd tell them to go jump in the lake.

  • No, Shannon, you'll be the only one who looks good!  I think it's silly to wear boots when it's a billion degrees outside.  As it will be in Atlanta in July. She's being kind of crazy.
  • I think like any other shoes, it's all in where you shop as far as how expensive they'll be.  If you can't afford $150 pair, don't buy those.  Look at Kohls and Target and TJ Maxx and online shops like zappos.

How much time do you have?  They'll be easier to find this fall and winter because a lot of places don't carry boots in the summer.

I think the pics Celles posted are really cute.

  • Some people get so caught up with the theme that they forget what weddings are about. This is a perfect example.

I'd shoot her an e-mail that said I couldn't really fit boots into my budget right now and did she have any suggestions on how to procure these boots.

  • I do agree that buying some from Target could be a good way to go. Just break them in first.
  • If I recall, I bought a pair at Target a couple years ago and they were only about $30. I wore them maybe once (probably for a theme night at the bar, my friends and I used to be really into that) and my sister has since taken them and wears them with dresses all the time.

Hell no. I think that's fucking moronic to request that. Yes, they are expensive. Even cheap boots are in the $200 range I think? It would be like saying, "Gee, I really want you guys to wear either Louboutins or D&G pumps to my wedding." No thanks. Unless she's paying. And even then I'd be unhappy.
