Are you really short?

2»

Re: Are you really short?

  • I have the opposite problem.  I am 5'8" with really long legs.  I have a hard time finding pants long enough:(

I have seen people cut the bottom original hem off, cut the pants to the length they want, then re-sew the original hem back on so it doesn't look like they were hemmed.  (I think I also saw this on What Not To Wear)  Just make sure to leave about half inch or so for shrinking.

Find a pair that fits great everywhere else, then hem.  Good Luck!
dont make ur password so easy. gbck2CA2 hahahaha
  • Heels- I have the tailor keep the original hem and while its extra money, its so so worth it!  I HATE the hemmed bottom look.
  • Laurenclaire, the biggest problem with hemming is that it's EXPENSIVE! Around here, it can range from about $10 up to $20-$25. The second number is for jeans -- when I do what squirrly noted and have them cut the hem off and move it up. And I don't live in a high cost of living area, though I do think I managed to find the most expensive dry cleaner around to do alterations Surprised
  • Also, if you find something that fits great, buy more than one.  It saves you from the headache of searching for the perfect jean or gray pants again.
and I think I've exceeded my post allowance for this thread :)
  • Nina is also a very comfortable high heel brand.

agreed, because they end up being your favorite and when you go back for another, they don't make them anymore.  They instead have stupid fades, and holes, and look like they are for a 15 year old.

EDIT: agree with the first part, not the last part :)

[QUOTE]In Response to Re: Are you really short? : That's amazing, and beyond my skill-level.  But it's a good argument for justifying buying a pair of designer jeans.  I like where your head's at.

I sew too, and I haven't tried it either.  The denim shop here includes hemming free, as they're all made for people 7 feet tall.  It's pretty snazzy, though - you can't tell at all that they've been done that way.

No designer jeans for me till after the wedding and we both have new jobs ironed out.  I am going to be a shopping wh0re then, though, as I am presently deprived.

  • Punky, you've been super helpful. Post away.

And tenofcups, I'm just going to bite the bullet and spend the money. I'm done growing, so I figure if I buy good quality stuff, get it tailored by someone who knows what they're doing, it'll last me a while and be a good investment in the long run. Also, I had no idea about the keep the original hem trick. That's what I need to do, because I too, hate the hemmed pant look.

  • I'm 5'3", so not quite as short as you, but I get my jeans at Old Navy.  Their "short" is just short enough for me, so those may not need too much tailoring.

Oh!  Yeah, I concur.  I have a couple of pairs that are 4" or better, and although I wouldn't want to dance on them for hours, they're great for just wearing normally.  And not that pricey, usually.

  • And now that I have looked at the links, I loved all but one pair. You nailed it. Now I have to concentrate on fixing the rest of my wardrobe. A million thanks. I'm much more comfortable with buying shoes online than clothes.

  • I am also 5ft and work in an office so I know what you mean! I actually found that Daisy Fuentes has dress pant's at "Khols" that fit really nice with heels and I second looking at Target for petite jeans and pants, they don't carry them often but when they do it's so nice to have a cheap alternative once in awhile =)

  • I think Old Navy and Levi's both carry "short" lengths.

  • Lauren, I might start with a nice, classy ankle boot with a small heel. They'll be sturdier. Chunky heels are cute, just make sure they aren't TOO chunky because they'll look a little too young and casual.

And yeah, cheap heels that are too high sometimes leave the ball of my foot feeling like I'm walking on cardboard. Ugh.

  • Thanks Mery. I've been pretty cheap most of my life and haven't paid all that much attention to my wardrobe. So most of the heels I own are cheap and not particularly well made.  I mean, I get dressed and look good when I absolutely have to, but for everyday stuff, I've been way too lax. I'm getting too old to look like this.

Let me guess, you didn't love the last pair? :D  Those are the vavavoom ones.  I promise you, give platforms a chance, because they are a lot easier to walk in than you'd think just from looking at them.  *sigh*  Sometimes, I wish I could just go shopping with people! :D

    *hug* Thanks for the love!
  • The last pair are the only ones I liked :) haha!

These were the only ones I just really didn't like. The last pair is awesome.

YES! hahaha!  I threw those in as a "conservative" pair. :D

    Doooo eeeet.
  • Mery, I just saw your post, thanks for the recs!

Amoro, I think I'm going to wait til I have some outfits to pair the shoes with until I buy. Or hell, I guess I can plan my outfits based on my shoes :)

  • I'm reeeeally late to the party, but check out the Limited as well.  They are usually right next to Express, and they have 'short' sizes.  I've rarely had to hem their pants and I'm 5'0".

For shoes, you can also check out DSW.com or the actual stores.  They have an insane amount of shoes in almost all price ranges.
  • I'm 5' too and have the hardest time finding jeans. American Eagle used to be perfect, but it seems they have made them longer. Express is great for jeans and work clothes. I was at Kohl's last night and got 4 pairs of work pants that fit perfect! And Nine West heels seem to be the most comfortable for me.

Indeed. You can do either way.  :)  But hey, if the shoes will get you started then definitely start there first.  AND the good thing is they can all be worn with jeans.  All all! YEAH!  You should be able to work tops and accessories in pretty easily.
  • I'm 5'3.  I second LOFT petites.

And like others have already suggested,  make friends with a tailor.  The difference is night and day.

Work your way up in heels.  Start with a kitten heel, then move up a little more, and so on.  If you go from flat to high heeled pump in one swoop, your feet will hate you.

Also, buy quality shoes.  Cheap generic heels will hurt because they aren't quality made.  Especially for someone who isn't used to heels.  Spend the extra money, your feet with thank you.

"Whatever East. You're just mad I RSVP'd "lame" to your pre-wedding sleepover."
  • As far as comfy heels, check at ALDO for shoe inserts for heels. They have the sticky stuff on the bottom so they stick to your heel, but the top is a black felty material so it looks like the lining of the shoe. No one could ever tell the difference. They really help with some stress of heels. I also suggest the little bulbous shoe pads just for the pad of your foot in heels to help absorb some shock :-)

  • While you're at Dillards, look for Gianni Bini (aka GB) brand heels.  They are very comfy and run about $80.  I'm 5'2 and buy all of my jeans from american eagle.  Unfortunately I am terrified of having high waters and typically buy regulars, so they drag the ground.  :)
