Getting in Shape

Arms/Shoulders

I'm not getting married untill Sept 2011 so I'm not worried about anything right now, but I know that I want to have extra toned arms/shoulders and upper back from my wedding, regardless of the dress I wear.

I'm 5'2 and about 110lbs, never been more than that in past 10 years. I also have small arms to begin with, but they aren't toned enough.

What and when would you start doing for your arms?

  • why wait? there's no time like the present.

pushups are great for your arms/chest/and even abs, so adding those would be helpful, and you can check out sites like www.womenshealthmag.com and www.shape.com for workouts or moves. most exercises that involve lifting or moving the entire arm will also work your shoulders and upper back - just remember to challenge yourself with the amount of weight you use.

    good luck!

  • I would recommend pushups and weight lifting, but I'd also recommend swimming and pilates for toning muscles, especially arms/back/shoulders.  Ditto PP that there is no time like the present!

  • p90x shoulders and arms workout with weights... It's an hour, but do it a few times a week and it'll kick your butt and make you look fantastic.
  • Why wait?? No time like the present! I agree with push ups, they work a lot of muscles at once. And do heavy enough weights to where you can't do more than 15 reps at once, at least this is what my trainer has shown me. Do a circuit of different upper body exercises 3 or 4 times.

P90X is also a great suggestion! Good luck!

  • What do you mean that you want to tone your arms?  Do you mean that you want stronger arm and back muscles?  Do you have fat on your arms and back (sounds like you don't weigh enough, but thought I would ask).  I agree with pps about pushups and I also do tricep dips which are great for the triceps (two good exercises if you don't have weights.

And also I would recommend weight lifting.  I lift usually in 3 sets of 8-10 reps of the most weight I can handle.  Some of the lifting you can try - shoulder presses, bicep curls, upright rows, tricep extensions.

    GL!

I'm 5'3 and weigh 115 lbs, my arms were still flabby, been working out a month now and arms now feel tighter, also getting married Sept 2011.

I suggest tricep extensions and skull crushers for triceps: http://www.myfit.ca/exercisedatabase/viewanexercise.asp?exercise=Lying+Triceps+Extension+%28Skull+Crushers%29&table=exercises&id=57

and for biceps: barbell curls and pull-ups

(would recommend starting with light weight, 4 sets of 10 reps, every other day and increase weights by 2.5 lbs once the current weight seems too easy)
  • @loop0406... glad you put the link to the "skull crushers" because I was a bit nervous about an exercise called that!  Thanks for the link though!

    Trust me, they work !

I have 5 older brothers who are into working out their arms/back and my brother suggested 'skull crushers' and I was not trying to do that exercise because of the name then he showed me and I tried it, not bad, you can feel that muscle working because the tricep isn't used much, it works, trust me !
  • Thanks! Youre right, I should start now!

Yes, luckily there is not much arm jiggle, but I love the look of defined shoulders!  Thanks everyone!
