Re: Dress Shoppin!!! Any advice?!

  • A strapless bra...most shops will have one for you to use, but who knows how often they get washed?

Go with "pretty" hair and makeup - it makes the look come together easier!  I went to one appointment a few days after having my wisdom teeth removed and had my hair in a ponytail with no makeup...I kept focusing on how odd I looked wearing a formal dress while looking like a slob rather than the dress I was wearing!
  • How exciting! My advice:

-Take along a strapless bra, and maybe heels. Salons always try to put heels on you, and it sucks when they don't fit.
-Keep an open mind, things look very different on you than on the hanger
-Don't get discouraged if something isn't flattering. It's just the dress, and there are tons more out there.
-Feedback is great, but concentrate on how YOU feel in the dress
-Take a break if you start to feel overwhelmed
  • I think opalsky pretty much said it. But a few more things:

-Don't try to find "the dress" in one day. If time is on your side, which hopefully it is, take your time
    - If you find your dream dress and it is a bit out of your price range, ask them if there are any discounts for paying in full, etc.
-take someone with you that you trust, but don't bring too many ppl along, it will make it stressful

     Have fun!
  • Thanks Ladies!! I am NOT planning on buying the dress tomorrow but want to this summer (doing the Running of the brides) and what to know exactly what i want!!

  • Good idea! Let me know closer to the Running if you need advice. It's a lot of fun but can be really crazy.

<div>Disagree. I would suggest minimal or no makeup so you don't smudge and ruin the sample dresses. Also clear deodorant is a good idea if you have it.</div>

  • Have fun with it. Try on all kind of different styles. You may dream of one style but it may not be flattering to your figure. Definitely wear your own strapless bra. It freaks me out to have anyone else's clothes especially as intimiate as that. With the make up and hair, I went with what I would wear every other day. One appointment I wore it down and one I wore it up. Dont take more than 3-4 people with you. the most I ever took was 4 and luckily they mostly agreed on everything. Dont let the salesperson be pushy! I asbolutely hate it when they are pressuring you to buy right now. Just get an idea of the style you like and then go from there.

  • Thanks opalsky i'll take u up on that!! My BM went once before so i have heard all the horror stories!! Also we're in NYC and we're going to the one in Boston in August cause I don't want to wait till February in NY with the wedding in June.  I of course would rather have the nice experience of the salon, but this is WAY more affordable, and its going to be a big trip so it should be fun!!

  • Cool! Well, if you're going to be in Boston, you might as well also check out VOWS in Newton, MA, where I got my dress. They stock sample dresses almost exclusively, so there are plenty of good deals to be had. In fact, much of what you'll see at the Running will be leftover stuff that VOWS couldn't sell, so they'll probably have lots of great new stuff in.

If you want to get a sneak peek at what they've got, check out bridepower.com .
  • Don't try on any dresses over your budget!

  • When I went dress shopping for the first time, I went alone. I brought just a strapless bra with me, nothing else. I wore my hair scrunched (I want to curl my hair for the wedding but who wants to get all dressed up to get a dress ripped over your head 20 times!) and no make-up. Just take your time and let your consultant know what you like and don't like. I would have never tried on my dress but my consultant suggested it.. and definitely don't try on dresses over your budget. You will just end up disappointed when you know you can't afford it but absolutely love it. GL and have fun!
