Swine flu shot people

There's a swine flu clinic tomorrow in my town. I have self-defense class at 1. In your experience, am I completely insane in thinking I'm going to be in any shape to take the class after the shot? I've heard all the horror stories but hearing from sane, rational people would be nice, too.

One thing to note is that a good friend of mine is teaching the class so I wouldn't have any problem saying I need to take it easy or sitting out any really intense demos.

Re: Swine flu shot people

  • I didn't get it (the flu shot always makes me sick), but none of my friends or coworkers who did reported anything worse than mild soreness.  Chances are you'll be fine for the class, at least based on my purely anecdotal evidence.

  • It's no big deal, just a regular shot.  No big needle like for tetanus or rabies.

  • Yeah, you'll be fine. I had no problems. In fact, my arm was less sore than for the regular flu shot.
  • Okay whew. I never get the seasonal because I too get sick from it but with the diabetes the swine flu makes me a little nervous so I want to get it. I've heard stories of crazy neurological side effects and people getting major dead arm. I will now classify those people as "extremely unlucky" or "crazy."

  • my son got it yesterday along with the regular flu vac. and a tetanus shot, went to work last night (painting) went to school today, said it was a little sore but nothing crazy.

  • Neurological side effects?

I sincerely doubt it. People are dumb.

  • I disregard anything people say about having a different reaction to H1N1 than to the seasonal flu shot.

I'm also irritated that you Massachusetts people can get H1N1 shots and, here in Rhode Island, my husband can't get it, even though we have a 4 month old baby at home.  Our Health Department sucks.
  • I got the nasal mist, and have had no side effects other than feeling like my nose was running all day.  And I think there's a much higher risk from the mist than the shot.

A friend of mine got the shot and she said her arm was less sore than after the seasonal.  You may not be 100% in self defense class, but it's not reason not to go.

  • I didn't have anything other than very mild soreness at the shot site.

  • Thanks guys!

Now I just have to hope I can even get it. They're apparently triaging the line to give priority to pregnant women and infants.

    This line cracked me up:

"A police detail and 11 nurses will staff the clinic. Webb admitted that they'll have no way to verify patients' high-risk condition claims, except in cases of obvious fraud.

"If we have an 80-year-old woman telling me she's pregnant, then we're going to have a problem," he said, adding that healthy adults planning to attend the clinic should remember their more vulnerable neighbors.

"It's truly a season of brotherly love," he said."

I plan on waving my pump around and possibly inducing a hypoglycemic episode, just to be safe.

  • Did you hear about the one in Saugus (I think it was Saugus)? They had twice as many people show up as they had doses. People are nutso.

  • Whoops, looks like it was Burlington, not Saugus.

  • Saying you get sick from the flu shot is like saying you get drunk from an O'Doul's.  It's made with a dead virus.  The flu shot can't give you the flu.
  • Well, I'm going by my own anecdotal evidence. I got the flu shot every year from when I was diagnosed with diabetes at age 10 until I was 17. Every year, right after the shot, I would get the flu. When I went to college, I stopped getting the shot. Haven't had the flu since. So, dead virus or not, that's all the testing I need to prove the hypothesis for myself.

  • Me too, Moo.  The only times in my life I've had the flu correspond directly with the only times I got the shot.  Perhaps we just have magical virus-resurrecting powers.  I bet Turtle is jealousE.

Yep.  I think the neurological effect is called psychosymatitis

  • Don't get the flu shot!  It's really just the government's way of implanting a tracking device into you.  And I hear it makes you autistic.

  • Yeah, that's not possible, sorry. You already had it when you got the shot.

  • It's okay, because Jenny McCarthy cured her son's autism.  She can help you too
  • I was surprised that my son's dr. office had it.  He was there for a physical and I knew they'd give him the reg. flu vaccine but then they offered him H1N1 too.  I don't know if they were offering it to everyone or if it's because he has some other health issues, but either way I'm glad he got it.

  • Well, whatever it is, I got the flu when I got the shot and didn't when I didn't so that's all I need to know. :)

Rose, i think that makes us the second coming of Jesus in the virus world.

  • Fallin- it could be. I don't know. I've just heard it from people I know but I didn't actually see them so I don't know all the details.

Mashed- Your son may be in the high-risk group because of his age. This flu is hitting young people harder than the regular flu so they're considered more of a priority.

  • But by this reasoning, aren't you afraid the vaccine with give you swine fu?
    image
  • I am concerned about that, yes. But I'm trying to weigh that risk against the risk of getting this flu with my compromised immune system/increased risk of complications.

Although, I just found out I have a job starting Monday so now I'm rethinking it again.

  • But, by this thinking, wouldn't all vaccines carry the risk of giving you the disease they're vaccinating you from? I mean, if the polio vaccine maybe gave you polio, it wouldn't have been so successfully erradicated.

    image

  • To clarify: The flu I got after the flu shots was milder/more predictable than just catching it on the street. So, if I were going to be home anyway, I was fine risking a milder/more predictable case of swine flu (if there is such a thing) because I had the time to deal with it. Now that I'll be working, I'm back to almost sure to get it vs. maybe I will, maybe I won't.

  • I'm not claiming the vaccine gives everyone the flu. I never said that. If I didn't have it consistently happen to me, I'd be scoffing, too, especially after taking micro and studying this. All I know is, for me, every single time I got the flu shot, I got the flu. I have had many other vaccines and have not gotten those diseases.
