Dress Length

I went to get my first round of alterations last night.  I was kind of bummed.  I thought I had remembered my dress to just barely skim the floor in the front.  But, when I was standing in the mirror I noticed that it's actually maybe an inch to an inch and a half off the ground.  I know it's not a big deal at all...but I just got a little bummed because it wasn't what I had remembered.  The alterations girl assured me that I was lucky to have a dress that fell to that length on me because that's where most ladies get it altered to.  Oh well, I'll learn to love it.  There are bigger things that matter a million times more.  Nonetheless, my curiousity has gotten the better of me.

Re: Dress Length

  • Formal gowns should be 1/2" off the floor. They may be altering them to 1.5" off the floor but that is not correct.
  • Maybe you could try wearing different shoes to make it fall slightly lower to the ground?  Flats or low kitten heels might make a difference.

Well, I'm already wearing the ballet slipper type shoes.  So, I can't go any lower.

In talking with people, they think that the dress I tried on in the store may have been an extra length dress and the sales girl probably ordered me a regular length.  I'm 5'10"....so that would make sense.  It's frustrating, but I have to make it work at this point.  I have to take just as much accountability for not checking that out as the sales girl does for not mentioning that the sample was extra length.  They offered to order another one for me...but at this point, I'd have to pay rush charges and they still say it could take 10-12 weeks to get the dress.  So, it's not really a gamble I can take.

    I appreciate the suggestion though.
  • I just had a brainstorm...I wonder what it'd look like to add another chiffon layer underneath so it'd peak out below the hem of the satin.  It has a split chiffon overlay..so an inch of chiffon peaking out underneath might not be too bad and I would feel better about it.  Hmmm...that's me thinking out loud.  Opinions?
  • I am also 5'10, and I made sure that my dress was long enough.  I had to pay extra for the longer dress, but the seamstress was sure to measure me from halter to hem.  Did your seamstress not do that measurment? I'd be super pissed at the store for not warning me about that.

However, if it still looks great with the dress, then don't sweat it and enjoy it!
  • It does seem like they should have offered the extra length. I'm 5'7" and as a BM they have always mentioned the possibility of extra length in case I like super high heels (I don't!). Also, the sample dress might have been a little stretched out.

However, 1.5" doesn't sound too bad, but it sounds like it's making you unhappy. I think the chiffon might be nice underneath and sold your problem. Can they steam it so it stretches just a little longer? I have had that done for a BM dress and it added about an inch.

<div>The same thing happened to me and this is exactly what I'm doing!  My dress is all lace and the bit of tulle peeping out at the hem looks so cute!  I actually like it better :)</div>
  • It should be a half inch to an inch tops. Bear in mind that when you're standing in the mirror, you're not always standing naturally-- the dress might not actually sit that high when you are. Also, it's hard to get a good read on exactly how high it is sitting. If you are concerned, bring a friend along and have them keep an eye on it next time you're in for a fitting.
  • Nothing was mentioned to me at all about extra lenght.  So, I'm very annoyed by that.  I guess my dress would be as long as the sample.  As someone suggested, maybe the sample was stretched out...which is a very good possibility.  They never measured my height.  They never asked how tall I was...and I guess I took for granted the fact that they could see that clearly I was taller than some.  Oh well, I'm going to wait until I get my dress back from alterations.  If I am still as bothered by the length, then I will probably go the route of adding a chiffon layer underneath that will make it just a tad longer.  I know I've heard on here before that details like that don't matter.  And, I know there are much more important things on my wedding day.  I was just dissapointed and for some reason it's really really bugging me.  Thanks all for understanding and offering ideas.  You girls are great!
