is jamaica safe to go to?

I am planning a honeymoon to jamaica.  we are really considering couples tower isle.  they have a lot included in their price and the pictures were beautiful.  Some of my friends say travel to jamaica is not good.  It is overrun by drugs and pick pocketers and violence.  I have been to st. maarten which was very nice, you did have to watch for people trying to scam you and pick pocketers but i think that's everywhere.  Has anyone been there or is going there?  is it really as bad as they are saying?  should i look for different desination?

  • Just got back 3 weeks ago and loved it.  The Drug Lord that they were looking for was captured 1 day before we got there and now he is here in the states to be sentenced.  Great island.  if you do need someone to help you check out www.506travel.com they help us alot.  Very satisfied!!!
  • Pwessinger is a travel agent.

As far as safety, I asked about safety in Mexico and got bombarded with people telling me I was an idiot for thinking it was unsafe. (look for the post "major HM confusion" below)

Anyway, I'm looking at couples resorts in Jamaica. They have gotten great reviews. I just posted about it before you did. I don't think any of the islands are completely safe, I was just afraid of the drug wars in Mexico that are moving to the tourists areas like Cancun. But I'm sure more people would have better insight.

  • Jamaica and Mexico both safe. We were in Jamica last year and Mexico this year. We are still alive.
To give you some insite (although we live an hr outside Philly dh does work there) you are more likey to be raped, maimed, mugged, murdered or any combination there of in the city of *snort* 'brotherly love"(not all areas are bad btw) than you are in the touristy areas of Jamaica or Mexio.

  • Are you spending time in Kingston?  I would say going to Kingston might not be a good idea.  But most people head to resort towns when they go to Jamaica.  We went to Jamaica (Negril) in March and didn't feel unsafe.

  • I went to Jamaica last summer and I felt safe. You will most likely be flying into Montego Bay and then having to take a bus to either Ocho Rios or Negril. Both towns are about an hour and a half from the airport. The ride is somewhat of a rude awakening of the poverty level in Jamaica, but it is an experience to see what the natives go through and it will really help you appreciate the ones who bust their butts on the resort. I know lots of people who have gone and loved Jamaica. It is beautiful, I think you should go for it.

  • When you go to the resorts, they don't let the people from the towns in, so it is safe!
  • Ive heard from a lot of coworkers, that if you stay at a place that is all-inclusive they felt very safe.  However... whenever any of them traveled outside of the resort to shop or sightsee they were very uncomfortable.

  • We travelled off the resort on an organized tour to the Black River and YS Falls and at no time did we feel uncomfortable.  The tourist-y places (like Rick's Cafe) are probably fine too.  You may want to avoid the shopping tours as you will probably get harassed by locals to buy stuff, anything from trinkets to drugs (both happened to us).  This made me uncomfortable but I didn't fear for my safety because it was daytime and there were lots of people around.  The shopping was lame anyway so it's not worth your time for that reason alone.
