register for fine china? I am torn. The sets that I like are super expensive and I'm beginning to think that I may not actually get the use out of them to justify the cost. To say I'd use them for holidays would require me to register for or buy even more. What do you think? My family does the family dinner thing, but isn't really super formal.
ETA: The link to the set that I think I like best...although none of them particularly moved me.

We're not doing it. I doubt we will have enough dinner parties, etc. to justify the cost, we don't want to ask guests to pay that much for a gift, all of our visitors would probably be more comfortable using "every day" dishes and I don't like most of the patterns anyway. It just doesn't make sense for us, but for a couple that is more formal and entertains a lot (and has friends/family with money! LOL) it might be a good idea.
My advice is, if you NEED other items, don't register for the china. If you have most things but are registering for a few items, then yes, go for it.

We registered for the everyday white china. That way I can always buy holiday/patterned salad plates and they'll still match. And like you, it would take 10 sets to accommodate our families and that can be a bit much. But, I DID register for fine flatware. The regular stuff gets scratched way too easily! It's $50/placesetting so I'm reaalllly hoping we get close to completing the 10 we asked for.

I registered for the flatware as well for this exact reason. Good idea about just customizing the salad plates. The funny thing about most of our everyday white china is that we chose really modern shapes...rectangular and such. Maybe I will put a set of round on so that I can customize the holiday plates with ease. Thanks!

If you like the modern look, check out mixing round with the square. The lady in BB&B pulled a sample for me and it's really striking. But, we're just not that cool in real life.
