In response to the recent Pitbull Post

These are the 10 Four Week Old Pitbull puppies I am fostering.  The mother was abused: used as dog fight bait for another male pitbull.  However, she is one of the most loving dogs I have ever met and is wonderful with children.
These babies are a gem, and I feel it is a gift that I've been able to care for them and work on giving them the best start possible.  I think pitbulls make wonderful family pets, but like every breed they need training.  I wish there wasn't so much negativity surrounding the breed.  One owner at a time we can change the attitude surrounding the breed.  Spay and Neuter your pets, and get them trained.

  • Aw, I just want to boop their noses.

Wouldn't it be nice to live together in the kind of world where we belong?
  • Those puppies are damn cute.  But (in ANY breed) for any one abused dog who's a sweetheart, there's another that could bite your face off at any moment for no apparent reason.  So don't have them around small children, pit bull or otherwise.

laladypoet: I understand wariness.  Me personally, I'm wary of chihuahua's, beagles, basset hounds, and toy poodles.  I've been attacked by all of these breeds, and on a regular basis!  Being a dog trainer I meet with dog's all day long, some just young and need fine tuning and guidance, some that have already developed aggressive or timid behavior.  All dogs have potential to be naughty, which many people have already agreed with.

  • They are so cute!  Of course, all puppies are cute, but 10 darlings, what fun!
  • Georgiabride:  She is the runt.  Less than half the size of all of her siblings.  We didn't think she was going to make it even up to last week.  But now she's eating solids and drinking water on her own!

Holy crow, they're adorable!  If I could take 'em, I'd take all 10... despite the food bills that would result!  Waaaaaaaaaay too cute.

  • Yay! Since you'll be adopting them out, have you named them, or are they numbered or something since the new owners will probably change the names anyway?
  • They are adorable! Have you found a rescue that will help you with spay/neuter costs and adoption?

I once had a bulldog break through a rope (rope!) to try and attack myself adn my brother. I'm still a little scared of the breed, but I don't think me one experience represents the breed as a whole.

  • I thought most people had come to this consensus by the end of that thread anyway?
  • georgiabride: Some have names, though they are more of a description
#1  Minnie  (Because she's the runt)
    #2  No Name (Girl)
#3  Hook (He has a hook marking on the top of his head)<2nd favorite
    #4  No Name (Boy)
#5  Spot (She has a tiny white spot on the back of her head) <Favorite
#6  Titan (Looks like his dad Titan)
    #7  No Name (Boy)
#8  Beta (She's the biggest of all the puppies)
    #9  No Name (Girl)
    #10 No Name (Girl)

  • jasmineh777:  Yep.  The rescue is finding homes for all puppies and the mother.  I love this rescue, it's where I got my boy Jackson.  They give $50 off the adoption price to anyone that signs up for training!

  • ALL puppies are cute. Its great that you are fostering them and it certainly paves the future as to what sort of temperaments they will have. With that being said, they still have aggression bred into them. I'm sorry, but a Chihuahua cant bite your face off. A pit could take your whole head off. And I dont recall hearing any horror stories about a Chihuahua or beagle gnawing on a baby's toes until it died (true story - and yes, the parents were largely at fault as well). Anyway - pet peeve is DEFINITELY comments like yours. Love your pits, but dont get bent out of shape about their "rep".
  • That's great. Vaccines and procedures add up fast!

Also, lots of bites get attributed to pitbulls when they're committed by other dogs.  People have no freaking idea what dogs are what, and some don't even know what their own dog breeds are.  Look here:

This beagle didn't attack the toes - it attacked Rachel Bilson's face. ANY dog can be dangerous, no matter how cute they are.

Um, hi. I didn't say pits are the <u>only</u> dogs with a tendency toward aggression. Good story though.

But you did basically say that ALL pitbulls have "aggression bred into them", which is just as close-minded.

No, but your implication was that pits are the ones that are causing damage & other breeds (using chihuauas as an example) don't have the same issue.  They absolutely can.<div>
</div><div>By the way, from what I understand, Chows & Akitas are actually the dogs with the nastiest tendencies (again, not all of them, but the highest percentage), not pits, dobies, or rotties.  Fluffy, teddy-bear-looking chows.</div>
You only live once, but if you do it right, once is enough. ~Mae West
  • I do think that the breed itself is more likely to be aggressive. So are chows, akitas, etc etc. Thats not to say that every dog of those breeds are dangerous or aggressive. They are definitely higher risk - if you dont believe me, just check your homeowners insurance.

Nope, but if you do a quick google search you will also see babies being mauled by golden retrievers, german shepards, daschunds, boxers and most recently (june 10th) a husky.

I believe it - we have a neighbor that was brutally attacked by her own golden retriever. Any dog is capable of attacking - my point is that some breeds are more likely to behave aggressively. Its shocking to hear about a beagle attacking, yet its not quite as surprising when we hear about pits hurting someone.

This argument actually reminds me of the "summer of the shark attacks" about 10 years ago. Does anyone remember that? The media was obsessed about it, but the irony was that there were fewer shark attacks that summer than average.

    Nope, took that class.
  • Art- I'm going to have to disagree that pits have aggression "bred into them." Any good and reputable breeder would be eliminating these qualities, and any aggression or even timid behavior is not acceptable in show dogs. A well bred pit bull should not have any aggression/fear.

A pit bull also doesn't have any more jaw pressure than most breeds, and thus is no more dangerous. They may have a tendency towards dog aggression, and need to be socialized, but generally don't have any aggressive tendencies towards people.

Unfortunately, they are the breed of choice for dog fighters. Hence the media image of them being terrifying. Every fighting dog starts as a sweet puppy. They do have a bad rep, and that is because asssholes fight them, and now that is what people think of when the see one.
