Non-traditional cake

I'm wondering how non-traditional I can go on the cake before it starts to look tacky.  My FI proposed in the Grand Canyon, so we thought, how cool would it be to have a cake in the shape of the Canyon: each side of the canyon, the river below, and the overlook where he proposed.  We could put the B&G figures where he proposed.  I'd leave the logistics to the baker, but I think it could be done.  If you went to a wedding and saw that kind of cake there, would you think it was tacky or delightfully unique?

I like your idea, but I am also having a non-trad wedding cake by having a Mr & Mrs potato head cake topper specially made (It'll look nice, not fake, and has sentimental value).
