Parent gift help

I have been racking my brain to figure out what to get my dad and step mother as a thank you.  I hardly know them.  We have not been close at all and even estranged for many years.  They helped us pay for the flowers ($850).  What do you ladies think would be an appropriate gift, knowing that I have no clue what their interests are.

Re: Parent gift help

  • Are there a couple restaurants they like to go to? Or even chain restaurants in their area (Applebee's etc)?  You could get a couple restaurant GCs. Who doesn't like to go out and eat?

  • I got my parents separate gifts (way easier that way). For my mother, i got  her a handmade lazy susan made from Nova Scotia wood...(she's been lookng for a nice one for years!)For my dad, i got him a gift cert for a round of golf....Maybe you should consider their personal interests when thinking of what gift to get....
  • Thanks for the suggestions... I probably will go the chain restaurant route so I know they'll be able to use them back home since I have no clue what their interests are... but everyone has to eat.
  •  Where are they from?  maybe you could get some suggestions on more unique restaurants in their locale.  If you go the chain direction choose one that is a little nicer : Outback steakhouse, Johnny Carino's.  I think a gift card to some chains looks kind of thoughtless.  Obviously it isn't and they will appreciate the thought anyway, but if you spend a little time researching the area it shows that you cared a little more.I think the best part of the present will always be the thank you note, esp if it includes the hope of growing closer together.

  • Ditto Leah! I think a nice note entailing how much it meant to you that they were a part of your special day would a perfect gift! Maybe even frame a group shot and send it after the wedding :)
  • If they are helping to pay for the flowers, it seems like they may want to have a part of your life now.  If that's not the case, please disregard this suggestion.  I plan to do an album of some of the pro pics for each set of parents.  I think that they will appreciate having some pictures from the day.I think that the card of thanks is also a great idea and the restaurant gift card is nice if they are not really interested in being a part of your life again.
