and guest and family???

My invitations only come with an outer envelope and I need help with a specific situation -- My fiance has a friend that is single, but has children that we would like to invite to the wedding as well...Would I address the envelope as Mr. John Smith & guest& familyI know I am breaking a few ettiquette rules here, but this is my fiances friend and my fiance is not exactly sure of the children's names or spellings of their names so I just wanted to put '& family' for an easy way out...I know it's wrong, but I really don't think the guy we are sending it to knows ettiquette rules either, so I basically want to find the best way to word it to make it sound okay =)  We also don't know who his guest will be because he goes through girlfriends like underwear...But does it sound dumb to put & guest and on the next line put & family???  How would you address it?Thanks!

Re: and guest and family???

  • Mr. John Smith and Guest Alpha, Beta, and Charlie Smith You're going to have to call said friend and find out how he spells his kids names. I had to do it with a TON of people, but they all loved that I put their kids names on the envelope.
  • You'll have to get the spelling of the kids names for the wedding so call him now and say, "Hey is there anyone you'd like to bring as a date?  Oh, by the way, how do you spell Fred?"
  • If the kids have the same last name as him...you could put to The Smith Family (not the most professional sounding but gets the job done) and if he is with someone right now, he could ask to bring her (even though its not the best ettiquette) or let him know verbally that the 'special someone' is invited. Or put The Smith Family and Guest.

  • 'family' on the invitation isn't going to cut it.  You'll need the names later and you can't count on the person to respond for the appropriate names.
  • Ditto banana.  Call and ask about kid's names. To avoid the "and guest" awkwardness, you could do outer envelope:Mr. John DoeSally and Jimmy Doeand then on the inside, drop a handwritten note that tells John he is welcome to bring one guest
