Buttercream or fondant?

GO! We're going w/ buttercream...but FI wanted fondant (until he knew the price difference.) My baker clearly prefers fondant b/c it gives him more room for decorating creativity...but I hate the way it tastes. I know it's not really meant to be eaten and the baker said that the caterers will many times just pull it off before it's served. However, I just couldn't see spending $100 extra dollars on something that's just there for show for an hour or two and then gets pulled off and thrown in the trash. It definitely makes beautiful cakes though. I almost caved and went w/it just b/c of the decorating aspect, but I'm trying to cut corners and this seemed like a good area to save some money. How about you?

We went with fondant but only because the baker we chose only works with fondant.  It was surprisingly comparable to a similar Publix buttercream cake.   I am in the super small minority that actually likes the taste- crazy, I know!  When FSIL got married, the fondant on her cake was like 3/4 inch thick.  It was so gross.

Buttercream for sure. Fondant is beautiful but I'm not a fan of the taste either. My baker also said she can do a lot of the same things with buttercream that she can do with fondant and that none of the ideas I mentioned would require fondant so buttercream worked for me!

I went with Gator D's baker so fondant also!! I like the taste (I will also eat confectioners sugar mixed with water for dessert, I am crazy about sugar) and I love the decor look!! FI prefers it also because he thinks it looks nicer (some of FIs opinions have really surprised me!)

I have not met with a baker yet (on my to-do list for today to call and set up appt!) but I don't care for the taste of fondant.

We're doing buttercream.  I personally hate the taste of fondant as well and it's so much more expensive. Also, the baker I'm looking at using does amazing buttercream work.  I was looking at some sample cakes of his and I could have sworn that they were fondant because they were so smooth!

My baker uses a whipped topping only. The buttercream melts too quickly she said and this is less sweet.

We had 2 different flavor cakes and whatever the icing was on those. I was totally addicted to Publix vanilla cake with buttercream icing at the time, though, from everyone else's tastings! lol! I always had some in the fridge. It's just a miracle I fit into my dress at all. I do love how fondant looks and had fantasized about fondant-covered cakes for years. But when I realized you couldn't really eat it, but killed it for me.

We're going with buttercream. I am just not a fan of the taste of fondant and our cake design is simple enough to be done with buttercream.

We're going with buttercream too.  The band around the bottomw and diamonds are going to be fondant.

We never would have paid extra for fondant.  Like you said, what's the point if it's just going to be peeled off anyway? Most bakers can achieve the same look with buttercream as they can with fondant.  Ultimately we went with the chocolate ganache though :).

Mmmmm...Kappa, one of our tiers is vanilla cake w/2 layers of chocolate mousse and sliced strawberries and then a thick rich layer of chocolate ganache in the middle. It tastes like a chocolate covered strawberry.

That sounds really good!!!  I saw them make one like that on an episode of Cake Boss.  It makes me hungry just thinking about it.

I am going with buttercream. I hate the way fondant tastes and cake is my favorite food(even though FI says that its not a "real" food) so my wedding cake has to be yummy

im going with fondant. butter cream did not give me the look i was going for and butter cream gets to shiny and sweats to much for me after an amount of time. you also can never be sure they are absolutely smooth and even. I have seen some cakes that looks awful because the baker did not smooth the buttercream out enough and make sure it was level. so i just felt fondant was the better option and my bake highly recommended it.
