How much is your caterer charging?

I am just trying to get an idea of how much I should plan to pay for catering.  I would be hiring an outside caterer to cater an event at a private venue. I am planning on a nice three course dinner (appitizers, salad, entree and maybe an extra dessert).  I am thinking of something nice (e.g., not a backyard barbeque) but also not crazy over the top (e.g., not frois gras for everyone).  I know the cost varies greatly depending on the the rental items and the food (e.g., china, chairs, linens, etc.) but I am trying to get an idea of whether I should expect to pay $50 per person for what I am looking for or $300.  Thanks so much for your help!

I am using Golden Rule Catering. They also have a liquor license and can serve alcohol. They are very affordable and have some YUMMY Buttermilk Ranch chicken. That is what we are serving along with salad, rolls, and 3 sides.

I'm using Be Creative Catering out of Hebron, KY for my wedding in Franklin/Middletown area, which is at a private home. We are doing something "nice" and not a backyard bbq, although we are having Grilled food at our outdoor event. Travis will work with you at any price point, though I felt he offered a GREAT Price for what he is giving us. Plus the services he will provide was wayyyyy cheaper than many others. He charges anywhere from $7pp up to $foie gras range. Give him a call and he will work with you. To boot, the food is actually good. Like, something we would cook. And that's what we wanted. Nothing boring. We wanted pizzazz and that's what he gave us.Now that is for food only. I would suggest getting a seperate vendor for 'rental items' because you'll definitely save money. We are using L&H rental and they'll travel anywhere.GL!

We are using Martha's Catering, also out of Northen Kentucky.  We're paying $7.95 per person, and we get 2 meat entrees, a type of potato side (mashed, au gratin, etc.) 2 other side items, a salad, and rolls. They will also cut and plate your cake for no additional charge AND provide containers for leftovers to be taken home with guests.  She includes disposable plates and utensils, but if you want something nicer I'm sure you could rent china, flatware, etc.  GL!

I second Be Creative Catering. Travis used to work for McHale's, the big caterer in NKY, and his prices are very reasonable. In fact, EVERYTHING is posted on his website, so there is no grey area http://www.becreativecatering.com . I am having Hand Carved Roast Beef (someone standing there carving it for each guest), Chicken Cordon Bleu, a few sides and rolls for around $10 pp!!! Super awesome!

We are using Sis's Family Affair, it's in Newport and we decided on the hot/cold buffet.  Which includes 4 or 5 sides, a hot meat, cold meat for sandwiches, rolls, and I can't remember what else.  It's only $5 a person, and it's really good food!  They have different menus though to fit whatever you want, and they are awesome about working with what you want! Good Luck!

I used BeCreative catering for my wedding in March and my brother and his wife used them for thier wedding in May.  I actually have another friend using BeCreative this weekend!  We had totally different menus and reception styles, but both meals so far were really good and Travis is great to work with.  If you want more info let me know!

Thanks for all the great replies.  This information certainly helps--I had expected to pay a lot more so this is very very good news!

I used www.schmidtsmeats.com and had a great experience. We had rolls & butter, salad & dressings, a chicken dish, sliced beef dish and a vegetarian pasta dish, baked potato casserole and green beans. I believe it all was less than $10 pp... but he cut me a pretty sweet deal to get that :) I had tastings at quite a few places, and their food was by far the best. They were awesome to work with too. GL with your decision!!
