How do you decide whether or not to send out Save the Date cards?

    My wedding wasn't on a holiday weekend, so it wasn't necessary. I just sent invites 10 weeks in advance. Only send STD's if you are absolutely sure of your guest list. Personally, I think they are unnecessary if your wedding is not on a holiday weekend or OOT.

    We decided to do them because ours is destination for everyone (in Nor Cal and our families live all across the country) so we wanted people to be able to make travel arrangements...

    We started getting requests for the date from family over a year out due to our long engagement, so we decided it was time to send STDs.  Our wedding is May 2010 and we sent them out a couple of weeks ago.

    It depends on your guest list and your date. It's good to send one if your wedding coincides with a holiday or a busy travel season; is somewhere that requires travel and hotel arrangements for your guests; is on a day other than Saturday.I generally think save-the-dates are a very good idea. As a guest, I like getting a big heads up about weddings because my work schedule is crazy and I want to make sure I can ask for time off to attend, and save money (if needed) for travel costs/hotel/gifts etc.I sent them out because a majority of our family is out of state and out of country, and needed plenty of time to make arrangements. We are also getting married on a Monday, and wanted people who wanted to come to have time to request time off from work.

    We are only sending them to OOT guest to give them a chance to plan for travel and I plan on sending them about 6-8 months out, for the rest I'll send the invite about 10 weeks out, just make sure you keep track of who you sent STD to, you'd hate to omit someone from the invite list that got an STD
