I just saw the discussion about video monitors from a few days back. (I've been out for a few days.)Have any of you looked into Angelcare monitors? They're like motion sensors that will go off if the baby stops moving/breathing for a certain period of time. Supposed to be great in case of SIDS. Run about $140 for the double handset version at BRU.My hypochondriac paranoid new parent friend swears by hers. Thoughts?

I think it would make me a hypochondriac parent. Of course I just gave in to the idea of a regular monitor this time around so ymmv.

Ha... that's why I tend to ignore half the stuff my friend tells me.. she's borderline nuts about some of this baby stuff. She's mortified that I intend to use Tide Free laundry detergent and not something organic made from free range corn or something. But I feel I do need to do some sort of monitoring device. I'm just thinking a video monitor won't really do anything but make me want to constantly look at the kid. Once you get the sensitivity thing worked out, the movement monitors aren't supposed to go off unless there really is a problem.I dunno. Hubby thinks we just need to wrap the kid in towels toga-style for the first 5 years to save on buying baby clothes. He may be onto something there.

We just went with the regular old monitor. I was too afraid that I would become obsessed with the video or the Angelcare. I still seem to sleep with one ear open on the monitor as it is. I certainly don't need the additional sensors and video.Honestly, I still go in and put a hand on his belly at least 4 times a night (before I go to bed).

Good point Dot. Now that Andy is older, it would be nice to see what is happening during naps. Sometimes when he is fighting it, we really have to listen to see if he is just overtired, or if he has rolled over onto one of his toys and is stuck in an awkward position.

Nope, Maggie slept in our room for the first 4 months and this next one will too.

Trust me. SIDS is like the boogie monster hiding under your bed and you are a five year old. For the first few months, you will be up so many times with the baby. If they sleep 5 minutes longer than they normally do, you will be at their side checking their breathing (even if you were in a dead sleep). A sensor isn't going to help that panic.

As much of a worrywart as I am, I was surprised at how little I worried about SIDS. Maybe since she slept in the swing I didn't worry about her rolling over etc. Plus newborns are loud sleepers so I could always hear her breathing and snorting. Aaw. I am totally getting a video monitor with two cameras, one for each room. I used one a few weeks ago at a friends house and fell in love, it's even better for older babies like Vinny said, you can see if there's a real issue or if they are just having a run of the mill cry.

See, I never had that panic. The first night my daughter slept through the night, I slept too. Maybe I was just too exhausted to realize I should be losing sleep over how long she was sleeping.

I don't vouch for any of my logic. I was so worried about having Andy get over day/night confussion, and I am just a schedule nazi to begin with that I had him in his crib within a couple of weeks. He looked so uncomfortable in his bassinet (or, I was uncomfortable with him in our room because my husband snores like a freight train, one of the two). In hindsight, I probably wasn't ready for him to be out of our room. Therefore, I was constantly on SIDS watch.

If you guys were good parents, you would flilp out thinking that your kid isn't breathing and hold his face under a running faucet to revive him.
